"Inherited" a Triple Turbo System

A good friend and business partner ordered a triple turbo system for his 96 Dodge ram. Shortly after he received the system he purchased a 2007 Dodge ram, 5.9. Because my truck has many more of the supporting modifications he decided to "trade" me for my Garrett Stage 3 (stage 2 turbine housing) and other excess performance parts. I'm sure I will have to throw in some extra bucks but I'm excited.

I won't be able to exploit the full potential of the triple turbo system as I need to upgrade my transmission and install twin 85% over dueling dragons (summer 2013).

I will start posting photos and updates to this thread when things start and as they progress (Hopefully this weekend).

They are Triple 64's. The turbos are each 64/12/65.

Looks like Sunday is D-Day...or maybe I should say TTT-Day.

Pics to follow...

Am I just behind the times? When did triple turbos become all the rage? Seems excessive to me, but I guess that's the fun of it all!

It is excessive. I might blow up my tranny and I don't have the fuel system to support it. (Deal with that 2013)

But I don't drive with my foot to the floor. It'll be an interesting experiment. People here can learn from it. We'll see what it does to the fuel economy.

I'm simply paying for an education if all goes to pot...

whos kit is it? and whos turbos?

had a guy on another site try a triple set up and they were a nightmare with lots of custom fabbing (even though they were suposed to be a ready to install kit), and he kept blowing the turbos. (D-tech).

Just be ready for some headaches if its not a WOP kit or a Crazy Carl kit. If its one of the two I mentioned I am very jealous and you are soooooo lucky.

anyway good luck, Rye.

I agree to some extent, then I heard about the numbers and watched some videos. Over 700 on little old 90's and breaking the tires loose at any speed. If I ever hit the lottery .

It is the Diesel Power Source Kit:

It doesn't look hard to install. Laid it all out on the counter last night. The only thing I can see that will need fabrication is the down pipe connection to my 5" Magnaflow Turbo-back exhaust. The Diesel power source kit doesn't have a flange on the downpipe. We'll see what happens.

See this thread, nothing was simple, nothing was easy, and the turbos are well I won't say what i think of D-Tech. Read the whole thread, hope you have better luck.

Oh and if your gonna run them I hope you have at minimum studs, maybe even the new age studs, coolant bypass, freeze plug block off plates, and you should have all the plugs in the head tapped and plugged (Motorsports diesel has a kit). The trip 64s make big boost numbers!

Again not trying to be that guy, just making sure people realize trips are going to need some serious supporting mods.

Thank you - I'll take a look.

Diesel Power Source has made a very recent modification to the kit since and sent those mods. So my install might be a bit easier. We'll see.

On the phone they also told me that a triple turbo kit isn't plug 'n play like an air intake. They were clear that there might be some mating up of the exhaust and the pipe to the intercooler. I give them credit: pretty hard to create a triple turbo kit that fits every single truck. I'm a business owner too and it's pretty hard to be perfect for every client.

Also, my work is done for the season so my truck can sit in my garage until March. I'm not expecting to have it on the road today.

And I'll be honest in this thread about everything. I'm not posting here to show off but rather to show what's involved and what the results are. Guys can decide for themselves if they want to go this way.

My truck is an experiment and I can afford the repairs. We all know there is a lot of BS out there about who knows what. I'm just going my own way so you won't hear me whining about repairs or complaining about the company.

Anyway, I've got my EFI tuned low and I'm not one for abusing my truck by mashing the pedal to the floor. I'll be keeping the EFI/boost turned down until I get the tranny and fuel system.

Once installed I will see what happens to fuel economy - the first experiment.

Then I will increase EFI a bit, closer to the limit of my stock fuel system and see what that's like.

Then the tranny and fuel install in late spring and turn up EFI one last time.

We got to the point where the turbine housings are installed - there were some tight fits but in all not harder than I anticipated.

There are only two things so far I thought could have been done better with the kit:

1. Provide metal exhaust gaskets for the wastegate tubing (they use a form-a-gasket type paste, metallic?)

2. The tubing needed to be blown out (had metal fragments) - but the instructions say to blow it out. I just don't know why they wouldn't go the extra step and clean it.

I see three issues that will need to be solved - but no big deal:

1. I am guessing the battery will need to be relocated.

2. The exhaust comes down in a great spot but will need to be fabbed up to the stock.

3. Might need to fab a bit to get the high pressure pipe to mate with my Banks intercooler pipe.

But again, the sales guy told me the kit would require a bit of fabrication...
