II SPS66 review

Well, I only got limited time with this thing. First things first, there were a few issues, but with Merrick Cummings working on it, nothing's impossible (or too ghetto). We managed to install the turbo without removing the ex. manifold using the biggest of all powertools, a forklift. heh. Anyhow, the wastegate had some problems, it hit over 60psi. Stock plastic IC let go at >60psi at around 120mph. TST with early twins program on 3x3, the temps never went over 1,200. I turned up the MP-8 to 100%, and it hit 1,450 and was holding steady, if not slightly getting hotter by a few degrees every few seconds. Then she let go. WEEEEEEEE. I love this turbo. It sounds great. I'll ghetto-fix my IC tommorow and see how well it holds up, and adjust the wastegate, because for some reason, I don't think it hsould have hit 60psi. More info and #'s to come.

How's the tranny holding together? 60psi is a little out the efficiency range for that turbo if I'm correct.

Haha, well it's hard to say, it's definetly slipping now, but that's prolly 550whp on 37" tires. I'm not kidding you, at least. I'll dyno when I get the new IC in.nd wastegate figured out

John,
Tell Merrick to stick a "stock" wastegate elbow in the turbo instead of the restrictive one that is supplied with the turbo.
That will bring your boost down into the 50psi area.

A stock elbow? Would the one supplied with a TST be sufficient?

I know I've said this for months, but when the lock-up clutch can't hold the power you _know_ it's time is near.

John,
No the TST is also restrictive.
Use one that would come stock on a 98-00 HX35 Cummins or 2001-2002 manual Cummins.

My SPS 66 is definately wastegated at 50psi. New TST PMCR R49 with twins will push it to 50psi by itself on 6/6.

You still have the stock head bolts and gasket?? I am thinking of upping my wastegate to 55psi, because I get a lot hotter than you do.

I'm getting mine installed Friday. I'll make note of the boost, egts, dyno numbers, etc during the install. I'll also see if I can get some video clips and pics. *smile*

From what I understand 2 of the bolt holes are supposed to have studs. My turbo had all 4 holes bored and none tapped, I had to source some bolts for the ext. manifold to turbo. After I blew up my IC, I decided to see what the wastegate was set at. It was 1/2 turn from all the way down. I don't know what it's supposed to be set to from the factory, but I hit 60psi.

John - Ask for Brett at II. He's running your turbo and has been very generous with his time answering my questions.

I just install their PS62/12 and it's been awesome so far.

Found an 04 IC at a junkyard for 300, in 100% perfect condition. My IC had more bent fins than this one. The one thing was that the a/c condensor bracket was at different lengths. It's hard to explain, there is less space between the brackets, but an allen wrench fixed that right up. I set the wastegate down to 45psi, but it doesn't cool nearly as well as it did at 55-60psi. I'm going to play with it later, what are most people's boost #'s with this turbo?

Talked to Brett at II. He cleared up alot of my questions. If you have enough fuel to push 60psi, it's not a problem, as long as you don't use nitrous or propane. Then your headgasket won't like you too much. I went ahead and adjusted my wastegate back again to 60psi to get that cooling, but it sure does bark at 60psi.
