HX40 Part Number?

Anybody know the cummins part number for an HX40?

Is it a true bolt on (with exception of 4" flanged down pipe)?

I was looking at turbos at the truck fest on Sunday and the new ATS dual plenum looks great, but it's not available yet and it'll cost about $3K + you need a different manifold. I really want to get more air and reasonable spool up, but I'm not ready to spend that much money. Figured a stock HX40 might be a reasonable compromise.

Stock HX40s are cheap and appealing, but not really the best compromise you can make for our rigs. Stock 40s are a fairly weak turbo and spool like turtles compared to the newer offerings available. The shafts are way to skinny for the heavy wheels and a stock one generally won't last long at all on a 3rd Gen, hence why they never became popular and you almost never see one on a 3rd Gen despite their low price. Just a couple of barks can easily take a stock one out of commission. If your set on a HX40, recommend calling Piers and talking to them about their modified 40. They put better bearings and shaft in them and they hold up much better, but cost more. A more popular choice for you would be one of the HTB2s from HTT or a Super B that are in the same price range as a modified 40 and perform much better on our trucks.

You can make anything fit, but I believe "True bolt on" for the 40 only applies to 2nd Gens. Not totally sure, but I believe the more recent offerings available for 3rd Gens are much easier to make work.

there is a super 40 that has better bearings and impeller i think. but it is the upgraded version of the original hx40. from what i was told this turbo should hold 45 psi reliably. and can be bought for around 850 bucks and it can be bought as a bolt on the only thing needed is a little piece that makes the housing go from straight out to a 90 towards the intercooler wich can all be found at www.turbosupply.net

Thanks for the reply anyway. I have kind of quit shopping for now since I just got transferred back east where there are no big mountains to tow over (bummer) and I don't race (another bummer). I do plan to move back to CO but it'll be a few years so I'll watch for a really good deal on something. There are always guys moving to bigger toys who want to sell there old stuff.

Take Care,
Hal
