How much faster did it feel w/just the turbo install? Were you running the Smarty Sr. with the stock turbo? I thought the better turbo would make less smoke. Any idea why it smokes more?

Thanx.

Did you dyno with the stock turbo too, or just with the upgrade? Just curious to see how much it helped as far as HP, and EGT's.

I didn't dyno with the stock turbo. I know my drive pressures were too high with a 9cm. exhaust housing. The smoke is due to the larger turbo not spooling to the same level down low. The stocker would spool to 20# allmost instantly with that stack, but it wouldn't flow enough air up top. I was hitting 1380* in 10 seconds with the stocker going up a small hill @ WOT. Now I haven't been able to get it over 1250* & with the Jr. on 100 alone, I had trouble getting over 1000* I think the Sr. with the aftermarket turbo, stock inj. program will be the ticket.

I tryed the Jr. on 70, & put the XZT back on, & gave it a try. No dyno #'s for you, but it still runs pretty good, & low end smoke is less. I'd guess, It's giving me about 425+/- hp. this way. Still haven't had the chance to load the camper, & try some heavy loads either. Will be loading up for spring turkey in Apr. Got 3 mountain passes to cross to get there. So far the turbo has allmost eliminated my top end smoke @ WOT. Once it's spooled up. Definitly a tad slower to spool than the stocker. It would blow up to 25-30# allmost instantly. The HTT spools about like a stock truck with stock power. Maybe a touch slower. I'll be very happy if the Sr. I ordered with the aftermarket turbo program stops my bottom end smoke. SW#9 with that, & stock TQM put down 429/800 on the dyno. I think it would do a few more with a couple more runs. I don't think the turbo was spooling all the way in the short time it had. For what I want, I'm glad I didn't go for the 62/71/14ss. I'm sure that would have been a mistake for me.

Just an update to ya'all who wanted to know. I loaded my camper today, & gave 'er a run up a hill. I started @ the bottom, & floored it. Belched smoke through 1st gear, cleaned up through 2nd. Locked the T/Q @ 60 mph, & hit 70 mph by the top, & here's what I saw.
Boost hit 40#
EGT's only hit 1256*
Once the turbo spooled up, there was allmost no smoke @ WOT. This was with my Smarty #9 Aftermarket Turbo/Stock Inj. program. The truck weight was about 11.5K#

If you opted for the tightest TC then that is why it is smoking a little in 1st. Not enough RPM to spool the turbo up enough. I got the 71 turbine and Lmills was kind enough to tell me to get a little looser TC or it will not be fun loaded starting off. I hope to order my parts next week. Yepee!!!!! Also, if you change the TM from stock it will help with the Smarty Sr. so I have been told. We shall see......

You may be right about the TQM. I had it on mild at first, & it smoked off the line too, so I put it on stock, but that didn't change anything, or not enough to notice. I'm going to try the moderate next, & see what happens. I don't think anything will realy change the low end smoke. When I got my trans, I was happy with just a Quad XZT. I should have known better.

The looser TC is definitely better. I know because I have a 91%.

I am glad I saw this thread. BigWheels, you and I have the same truck configuration and almost the same exact mods, except for your built tranny and now your new turbo. I think with my Uncle Sam money I will be investing in a turbo and some tranny parts. Bigwheels, are you running stock injectors?

Yeah. I'm running stock injecters. I may try the aftermarket turbo,& injecter programs, & see what that does, but I'm afraid I'll lose power. It doesn't smoke that bad. More than I'm used to, but definitly not like some I've seen on here.

I think the aftermarket injector programs change the timing and you probably do not want that with stock injectors. I am not sure how much different your turbo responds than mine. If I roll the throttle on nice an easy I can leave with very little smoke. If I just step on the peddle quick running Smarty on #9 it puts out a very large cloud. Does your turbo smoke even if you roll on it easy when empty or is it just when you are trying to get the load moving? I was going to try some of the moderate or wild softwares to see if the heavier fueling down low will help the spooling.

I put the moderate TQM in this morning. Still with Atermarket Trbo/Stock Inj. & ran it with the camper on. Spools a lot faster now, but the throttle is touchy. I'll get used to that. If I roll on slowly it doesn't smoke much, if at all. If I get on it pretty good, it spools up fast, with just a good puff off the bottom. I talked to Bob today, & he's going to send me the beta 4.2 to try out. But it's not here yet.
After I off loaded my camper, I noticed right away there was more smoke down low without the load. But if I roll into it easy it stays clean. Now I wish I had tryed this on the dyno. My SOTP Gauge says it's stronger now.
