How Much Nitrous is Safe???
I have a speed shop in town that can put together and install a funny gas kit for about $300-$400. All I need to supply is the nozzle and jets. So I'm wondering what would be safe for my app without headstuds or firerings? I'm hoping to run a 100hp pill. Any thought on your guys' part will sure help.
I have never even considered Nitrous, but am curious, would my setup with the studs and fire ringed head gasket, cams and springs be able to handle a 100, 150, or 200 shot ?
OH yeah,, and you would love it,, a nice little single shot of 100 off the line,, vavoom baby. Just that little extra to get the turbos spinning. Not too much is needed with your setup

It is one heck of a kick, my brother was spraying alot for a while. He sprayed something like 150+ rwhp and that big CC DRW would bark them, and once spun them all(rubber on the inside of the front fenders is a strange sight). I think nitrous is much safer on the diesels then on the gassers.

Another friend has a 01 running a 120 jet hitting 55 lbs plus and has no head work. Hes been running like that for 2 years.
Now if you are feeding it all the time with no mercy-yes I would say get the head work.
Another overlooked benefit (that I think is better than the added HP) is the cooling the Nitrous does for the EGT. 250 degrees cooler on the above 03 on average. Without the N = hitting 1550-1600 at the end of the pull. W/ the N = hitting 1350-1400 tops at the end of the pull. Thats with the extra horse power!
With the fueling stack you are running (edge + BDDL) I would not spray it. My guess is you'd pop the HG running that much timing. I'm spraying on a stock HG with studs, but I'm not running a downloader, so it's give and take. FWIW I pick up 85hp on my mild setup. With a single charger you should pick up 100 hp with a .060-.070 jet.

I would at least get it studded. I have never ran nitrous, Just the Crazy Larry/tst. Running 55psi boost but there is alot more to it than boost. Cummins gave me the thinner headgasket (which created even more cylinder pressure) which caused it to go again I think. In the short 700 miles I recieved valve contact that I didn't have last time. It's time for some F1 Springs... To be honest I think every truck that gets abused should have studs and F1 springs. I should have put them on last time...
I know of several trucks that have blown headgaskets with just the stack when using a crazy larry due to the timing like banshee mentioned. I wouldn't due it without at least having studs. I've had my nitrous system since last year but haven't installed it and I'm glad of it now. My stock 200,000 mile headgasket is leaking oil out of the front of the motor and I have had it wastegated down to 42 psi ever since I installed the Sledpuller. I had the HTB2 at 38 psi. Hopefully my new ported and oringed head will be on in a month or so and I can do a little dyno work and then hit the track this spring with Mach 7s and spray.
the inrease timing from the bullydog/tst stack already raises cylinder pressures. Add in the additional NOS you want to spray and you are on very little borrowed time before a headgasket lets go.

I agree that a motor with stock bolts *can* take a downloader/TST (or other combo) stack, but I'm saying basically what lmills is saying... the timing advancement from both builds a lot of cylinder pressure that stresses the gaskets. Spraying N20 only makes it worse. I'm not saying that you couldn't stack the downloader and TST/Juice and get by on stock bolts, even spraying, but I wouldn't call it safe, either. If you're going to spray my opinion is that you need to run less timing. The unfortunate side is that the truck probably won't make as much power or run as well on #2 only, but it's a tradeoff you have to make on a factory gasket. I agree the number of cycles the HG sees also has an effect, but if something isn't right then even a new gasket can blow (see Luken).
