How much boost is too much on stock turbo?

I have the Smarty Jr. on my truck now and when I really get into it I can hit about 40-41 on my boost gauge and it will stay there. By the time I get to 40 or so I have to get out of it because of my speed. I want to know if that is to much boost on my stock turbo though. I'm worried because this is driving while empty. What is going to happen while towing up a hill with constant boost. Without the Smarty I was able to spike at about 34 and it would settle around 30 WOT. What is worse, to much boost or high EGT's on the turbo? Right now my egts are lower then ever because of the smarty so I am not worried about that.

You're fine at 40psi.

There are a lot of guys running the stocker that high. I ran mine there for over a year - around 30k miles - and it was still fine when I took it off. I don't know why people say that it's not good when it has been proven otherwise.

I have hit close to 50 a bunch of times on my turbo. I got scared though and put on a wastegate controller to keep it at 42-43 PSI. 40k on my turbo so far.

Matego,

I've seen you mention a boost controller before. What kind do you have?

These small turbo are very inefficient at the higher boost levels. Backpressure and heat really climb as the turbo is pushed above 30#. Probably anything above 36# is pointless from a performance standpoint.

Why would the JR be showing boost over the stock WG setting?

Smarty (O.G) doesn't boost (or fool) any higher than 30-34 for me......?

All I have is an edge juice. On stock setting, I hit 38psi. With it turned up to level 3, I can hit 42psi easily, and that what my max boost is set at.

Same here - 42 psi steady with juice on 2 or 3. Have had it there steady on several long steep hills with 12-15k in tow. Almost 30k miles that way and she is still holdin together. At least for now.

I hit 42 once on my 03. That scared me a bit. But, 38psi is normal for me. From what I've read, low 40's is fine on those newer turbos.
