How long will a EGT probe last

I have my EGT preturbo. How long before I should look to replace it. I tow #6500 boat in the summer. My guess would be 2 years.

Let me guess, someone told you it will break off and go thru the turbo, causing destruction of the turbo? Thats a story that's told on some of the other forums, but ask anyone if they know anybody that actually happened to...

We put the same probes into aircraft pre-turbo if that tells you anything. Probes breaking off are extremely rare.

Don't sweat it - a deer will jump through your windshield far more often than your probe will fail...

I do not believe it will fall into the turbo. I work with heat treat equipment and some customers will change the thermocouple every year. It is pretty cheap insurance and maintains accuracy. With the temperature variations, I would think the t/c would get inaccurate after a while. But if you folks have benn using it for 3-5 years, I'm not going to think about it for a while. I should just watch TV and quit thinking too much.

It's a good question, and you are right. Heat treating metal needs to be at specific temps for a specific period of time. We use the probes to just monitor trends.

Put the remote down and post away my friend.
