u can go to the dealer and get a reflash to try and help mpgs. sometimes that works very well.

or u can get a small pressure box, (edge ez or quad zxt), these usually increase mileage as well as power.

i have the quad box on mine and i picked up a solid 1-1.5 mpg increase.

Fuel Mileage

I just completed a 3.5K trip from PDX to So Cal and Back at 11550 GVW with a big cabover camper, Lots of extra wind load with the camper.
Average 15.2 Hand calculated for the entire trip.
My Truck regulary pulls 22+ empty on the hiway, I never drive many miles in town so I do not have an in town figure.

I have a 2004.5 6spd w 3.73 gears

Speed:
Best Mileage is at about 60MPH
Tire Pressure
60PSI+ even empty
Tires I am running the stock Mich tires

Additive
PS desel Clean and MMO, about 16 oz to the tank
Tone Ring Timing Advance

Amsoil 100% synthetic

No warm up idling, I start up and gently drive off (always park in garage)

Shift at about 1700-1800 unless pulling hard

Keep the air filter immaculatly clean

If you want good mileage you will have to light on the fun pedal!

Hope this helps

Here is a short list of things you can do, some of them obvious:

Tires are at recommended pressure
All maintenance done at proper intervals
Free Flowing Exhaust/Air intake - My opinion is that you need to do both to get better mileage
Tone Ring Mod or Rokktech or box
Fuel additive that boosts Cetane

What speeds are you getting 17 at. When people say 17 mpg highway, its so vague. Interstate speeds can be posted anywhere from 55mph to 75 mph. My 04.5 was getting low 18's at 73-75 mph. with all the above.

I'm not aware of a reflash for the 05's that had an effect on mpg's, The only reflash I know of affects early 04.5's.

A good flowing air filter, such as a Wix paper drop in, or other high flow foam type. Swiss cheese the bottom of your air box at the same time.
Tone Ring mod.
The cheap route to higher mileage. Try this before you spend the money on a box.

From reading here, that appears to be an excellent combo....Whenever I get 35's I'm planning to get the XZT, so it doesnt fall on its face with bigger tires...

I wanna really look at doing the Tone Ring Mod then. I started to read up on it when everyone started talking about it and became really confused on what to do. I guess it's easy? Anyway, I'm getting about 16-17 mpg (hand calc.). My most noticable fuel increase was when I went to 315's. With 4:10 gears, the taller tires lowered my RPM's a bit. When my speed reads 65, I'm really going 70, but my RPM's are as if I'm 65. Not a bad deal. Where the bigger tires eat fuel are during stop and go situations.

Hey tbone - I'm running my '05 mostly empty (winter) taking it easy around 55-60mph back and forth to work - 95% highway. MPG's are 17-18 - free flow exhaust and RAir III/UNI filter, no box installed (yet). Although I have 19.5's, I run stock Michelin's in the winter - heavy tires are for when I load up the camper come spring time.

What am I missing? My 03 had been getting 21-22mpg consistently under similar conditions, and yeah, I know the 'newer' CTD's are 1-2mpg worse off, but can't seem to get to that majic 20. Hope to install my quad box this weekend but will still have to take it easy as roads are iffy and I want to keep my shiny side up!

get an economy car! that CTD isnt made as a commuter car. use the CTD to pull anything you can hitch to it, go fast, smoke out tailgaters, laugh at fords, etc........

I never commute in the Ram, especially not short distances. I bought a '91 CRX for next to nothing, 38+ mpg.

that way I dont worry about mileage with the ram

If you want better mileage buy a little car not a 8000lb truck. Sorry had too.

Seriously though mod the heck out of it. It helps.
