Hood louvers/vents
Hood louvers/vents
I wonder if anyone has installed functional hood louvers to help let the hot ir escape the exhaust and turbo sid of the engine. This seems like it would help in cooling down the turbo and manifold at idle and after engine shut down. It sems it would help in the a/c cooling, too. I do wonder about watering entering and eventual rust. I have looked at these at www.hoodlouvers.com Seems like a good idea but I'd never do it without input from the user on here! PCM
I thought about buying a set as well. With the amount of air being forced under the bumper allowing hot air to escape through the hood should drop under hood temps quite a bit. Winter time they would need blocked off though.
Wow. I thought this subject would generate a lot more interest and comments. It seems a pair of hood louvers - or at least one on the right side - would allow a lot of heat to escape the engine bay. In turn that would allow for better turbo and manifold cooling once the engine is shut down. I just don't want to be the guinea pig and go out and start gutting holes in my hood. My truck is not a daily drive - jst used for towing a rv fiver. Hope to get some post from techs and anyone who has done this mod. Thanks. PCM
Some strong testimonies by Border patrol, Search and Rescue crowd and others:
""The heat is now dispersed well and the engine is much cooler. I can now lift the hood prop rod by actually touching it with my hand, without burning myself, unlike before...As we all know 'less heat, less possible component damage.' Thanks for making a top quality product that REALLY works!"

We experienced a 15 degree drop in the engine temperature on our race car with your louvers – thanks!"

"We like these vents because they are easy to install and they come powder-coated with clean-looking stainless steel pop-rivet fasteners." – Four Wheeler Magazine
I may try a set of these on my 1990 DSM turbo car since it builds a lot of heat with a large aftermarket turbo. may also reduce hood weight

PCM, Sometimes you just have to go out and be the guinea pig. I don't think anyone wants to butcher their hood up only to find that it doesn't work or that it looks like doody.
I had a similar response when I asked about putting my Rokktech on my new 6.7l truck. Nobody had tried it and I just had to find out if it would help so I just did it. It was the same with doing the Tone Ring Mod a few years ago. There was lots of talk about it but nobody wanted to mess their truck up until someone else tried it first. So, basically, what I'm trying to say is to get out there and be a pioneer. I would put the louvers on both sides of the hood just for the sake of the appearance. For me, I have an exit for the hot air under my hood already so I won't be doing this mod......

I would do it if I were you. Or, if you want, you can order the medium size ones, send them to me, and I'll put them on my truck! I'm buying and putting the TS Torque Converter lock-up controller on my truck on Monday and I have to budget my mods, ya know? I think its a great idea!
Thanks guys. It seems to be a good idea. I think its's something I will end-up doing. The turck is only out of the garage to tow the fiver on pleasure trips. It only get about 6k miles a year. PCM
Another thing you can do, if funds permit, is to find a take-off hood from someone who has gotten an aftermarket one and cut the holes in it instead of the one on your truck. If it works out and looks good then you pull your stock hood and sell it. If not then you still have your nice clean hood....
BTW, I think it's a good idea and if you get the right louvers it will look awesome...
