high output?
If I'm not mistaken, I believe every Cummins engine from 04.5 up is an HO. If yours is an 04.5, it made 325hp and 600 ft-lbs from the factory. The easiest way to tell is to look on side of the valve cover. There should be a sticker there telling you the power output.
Not necessarily. HO stands for high output. The HO engines in 03 and early 04 had 305hp and 555 ft-lbs. I don't know for sure what kind of power the standard output engines made in those year models. I think they were like 235hp and 460 ft-lbs or something. In 03 (maybe early 04 too, not sure), you could only get the HO with a 6-speed manual.

What that means for you is, if you are looking at installing a tuner or programmer, you have to make sure you pick the proper one. There is a difference in programming from the 04 to 04.5. other then that, mostly everything else hardware wise is compatible in all 2004 trucks.
'03 was the only year with 3 different engines:
235hp was the California Special for their emissions. Because they like being different.
250hp was the Standard Output engine, and was the base engine model if you didn't live in California and didn't order the HO.
305hp was the High Output engine, and was an upgrade option.
Yeah I know, confusing isn't it? I felt the same way when I had my '03.

Just to throw things off from a few posts above lol... It's a build date of 11/03 with 305hp on the sticker on the valve cover and a C on the vin with an auto tranny! Which brings me to my next question, since it's an HO, do I automatically have the 48re? How can I tell?
The 48RE went into production 01-03 so its definitely that. The 47RE was offered on the SO up to that point.
Both 03 and early 04 had 3 engines,Cali, SO and HO. Early 03 SO's could have a 5 speed or auto with the HO getting the 6 speed.
