Help with rims tires.

I'm new here, and did a search but came up empty.
The deal is, I'm looking at maybe getting the Helo Maxx8 wheel (17x9) and some BFG 315's. Will this work, or are there better options. Would I be better off w/ 35x12.50's??

I don't want to mess anything up or have to change anything to put these on. I don't mind buying a 5th tire for a spare, but I don't really want to buy a 5th rim. Oh ya, it's an 04.5 2500 Laramie. Thanks for the help.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just make sure you get the correct back spacing so the tires won't rub. Or do the 04's have that problem? I know you can pick up a set of H2 wheels, bore the centers out a little bit, and fit those on.

Don't know what your budget is, but I just picked up a brand new set of 4 Hummer H2 aluminum wheels and BFG 315/70/17 All Terrains for $500... quite a bargain if you ask me, since tires alone would normally easily top that. I will be modifying them to fit and hopefully installing them this weekend. I will post pics when it's done. If you'd like to see what these wheels/tires look like mounted up, do a member search for 'Hoot' and 'BigCarl' and check out their photo galleries. There are many others that have these on their trucks, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head. The wheels aren't overly flashy, but they look like a nice OE aluminum wheel and they seem to fit great with regards to width and backspacing. If this is something that interests you, do a search on this forum for "Hummer wheels"... lots of info available regarding this. Good luck!

The budget thing isn't that big of a deal. I would like to keep it within reason. I'd say no more than about $2200 or so including the spare.

To be honest, I don't care much for the H2 wheels, or the H2 for that matter. I really like the maxx8, but size becomes an issue. I'm thinking 17x9 w/ BFG 315's. I had the local tire place quote me $790 for the tires mounted, balanced, ect... By staying w/ the 17" rim, that keeps me from having to buy an extra for the spare, right??

Not being able to actually see the results until its too late is whats making me nervous. There were some pics on here a couple of days ago of someones rig w/ the maxx8's, can't find it now?? I only want to do this once, so I don't end up selling them on ebay for half price in a month because I got the wrong setup. Thanks for the reply.

sizing

coolslice,

I know you don't like the H2 wheels but let's use them for a baseline. They are 17 X 8.5, and with the 315's on them, are about as close as you can get without rubbing. 17 X 9 with ANY less backspacing than the H2's, and 315's, will rub. For your reference, the H2 wheels are the perfect size for these trucks with the 315's mounted. Use them for the sizing on any other wheels you get if you plan to run stock height and 315's. I have done some serious four wheeling with my truck and they have not touched, but it's close. Also, they stick out beyond the fenders and love to sling water (consider flairs).
I would be interestd in knowing if there were any other aftermarket wheels the same size and backspacing as the H2's.

PS: The 315's are approaching the max size you can fit in the spare area. If you plan to go bigger maybe you should test fit, or measure.

Chuckr72, Thanks!! That is the look I want. Now here are a couple of questions.

1. What width are those?

2. Do I need a leveling kit to clear those??

3. If I were to get 17" instead, is there a tire size that is slightly smaller than 315's that would be a safer bet ? I am not good at all with understanding tire sizes and what will work..

4. Do you have a spare to match?

Thanks for the help, I'm getting closer to ordering.

they are 9" rims, and i dont think you will need the levelling kit it you only go with 315s, the only time the 325s rubbed was when i turned real sharp, but i have the levelling kit on now cause i have fender flares. and no i dont have a spare to match , but i guess thats what aaa is for

Got these take offs for $400, brand new, took about 3 hours and $50 to modify. They look decent when someone makes a 17" wheel with the right offset I may buy them, by that time there should be a E rated tire in the 315 size as well. In the mean time these are cheap look better than stock (in my opinion).

Yep, H2 rims and 315's are the way to go at this point in time.

A little off topic...how did you modify yours? Did you have to rebalance? I have a set sitting in my garage waiting to be modified and some dull center caps.

I used a 4 3/4" hole saw with a big two handed drill. I then used a file to clean up the cut a little. The saw cost $50 from Grainger. I did not dismount the tires. In my opinion these rims are lug centric, meaning the lug centers the wheel. They run very smooth with no vibration. No tire shops around where I live can close to matching the balancing they do at the factory, these tires are almost 35" tall and each has less than 2 ounces of weight on them.
