help - hard run with some small pops, now no low end power

I was making a couple of hard pulls with my truck, rail stayed above 18, but I heard a couple of small pops that sound like they came from the tranny(6spd). Truck ran good, I just let out. Got back in it, still powerful, no more pops. Let out and called it quits. Went back home and loaded a new smarty and now there is a hesitation and lacking of power unless i plant the pedal.

I also noticed when I installed my Flux2's, that I had a small "thumpin" coming through the air filter, sounds kind of like a tomtom drum. The thumpin might be louder now, or I'm just paranoid. The oil level is right on, no diesel smell. But its just sluggish pulling out. Does the rail relief make a popping sound when it goes, or what? Set it back to stock and still sluggish. TST and MP8 unhooked. No codes.

Anybody got any ideas or had this happen? Should I unhook the cables?

What did the rail pressure max at? Was it at 27.5Kpsi for long? Running a pressure SW#? You might've trashed the rail relief valve - swap a rail cap on there (you DO carry one in the glovebox, right? ) and see if the sluggish pedal goes away. Wonder if the FCA is hurt?

The rail never got that high. I got in the throttle and the rail dropped to 16-17, was back up to 18 slowly when the little pops started. Got out and in again, temps are below 1250, rail never got back above 20 but still pulled hard.

No, I don't have a rail cap. Where can I get one quick?

You can hurt an FCA?

I've got a spare CP3, maybe I should swap?

Looks like dyno day tomorrow might be a bust.

Did the aftermarket fueling stack timing w/timing?
Low EGTs don't always mean low piston crown temps....

Surely the APPS is OK? Your truck should have it on top of the accelerator pedal arm. Removing it jacks with the calibration, but I suppose you could test the two DC signals from it to see if one is half of the other (fancy FSM test procedure ) by probing the wire with it in place.

IIRC, a cap is about 50 and a new RV is around 350, thats why I run a cap. I got mine from Floor it diesel.

It doesnt sound like the RV but you never know, it would be easy enough to check it and see.

And FWIW, my RV didn make any noise when it let go, the truck just shut off. But yours could be on the way out and not completely shot yet, and again that may not be your issue at all.

Pull the relief crank the engine and see if fuel sprays out of it, some will come from the banjo line due to thats is part of the return but it should not come out of the relief valve its self. If it does replace it or tap and plug it. Its worked for me for a long time now.

Now your just scaring me!

It was Smarty 9 with no other timing sources.

Does it smoke or anything when you melt a piston, or just run like crud?

A cap should run 50 cents....

1/8 in nps plug with a broached allen head...fits really nicely after the tap is run through the bore of the banjo bolt!

Hey Keegan, didn't you just do springs? If so, check your valve lash settings.

Will do Loyd.

This would cause such a problem? Sluggish pedal? Is poor performance after a fresh install of springs common?

My springs were installed about 3 weeks ago . . . no problems.

PHEW!

We can rule out massive internal carnage...
