I have a Garmin GPSMAP 478. I bought it for the boat last summer, then realized it is loaded with street maps too.

VERY NICE UNIT, but like I said, it was bought for the boat, so it is a chart plotter with at bunch of other marine features I would need a degree to understand. Plus, it's a costly unit.

It may sound gay, but I've heard really good reviews on the Tom-Tom. Simple and effective.

My brother in law has this unit, he speaks highly of it, does every thing he needs it to do.

I have the Garmin C330, almost the same as the one above and it works great. I had Tom-Tom when I was running the A2 monitor on my Edge and it SUCKED! Didn't have near the database of streets that Garmin has.

garmin is pretty awesome, I have the same unit, the c340, and it is sweet. the only issue is when I come across any construction sites, it tends to lose its mind because the streets are all changed. but man, this little baby saved my butt once in white out conditions, I thought the road was straight, and looked at the GPS, saw I was approaching a giant turn, almost flew off the road, but luckily I had this thing.

Works good if you ever put the truck in the water by mistake. Keep away from those buoys!

Yeah, it's got sunrise/sunset, tide tables, underwater obstructions, water depth charts on the Chesapeake, a whole bunch of other stuff I don't know how to use.

is there that big a difference? i picked up a tom tom on sale around christmas for $100 and it worked o.k. on a couple of road trips, but didn't have anything to compare it to.

I have a Garmin iQM5. I needed the PDA capability to use my Landtracker software - punch in a LSD, converts it, and routes me there.
