Got my Donaldson 51" muffler

It is at Carquest, whick is right next to my muffler guy. I asked my friend at carquest if it has a baffle. He says it has a cone shaped baffle inside one end. Who has left this in with great results and who has removed/modified it? I will be giving the kitty a vacation as well.
Thanx.

I might end up doing that. I will see what muffler guy thinks of this one.
Thanx.

Here is a cool page on it with flow info & stuff. Its listed application from the maker is; "off road only." That is a good sign.

When you put one of these in, replacing the factory "offset" one with a straight through, what will that do to your tail pipe angle?

(that and/or intake next on my list after gauges)

It should not be an issue. I replaced the stocker on my 04.5 with a straight magnaflow. The exhaust guy just welded new hangers to the muffler to go in the stock rubber things on the frame. Tailpipe angle was not altered. But this time, since there is a resonator thingy in the tailpipe bend that needs to go away, it will be a diff story.

Thanx.

That depends...if you remove the CAT then you can install the big donaldson or nelson almost in a perfect straight line back to the tailpipe because there is an offset in the cat that lowers the pipe and an offset in the muffler that raises it back up. All I had to do was cut the tailpipe and make one small angle change (wouldn't have had to do it but I like perfect fits). The muffler sits high in the frame after the install. Here are a couple pics, the second shows the angle change I made in the tailpipe.

Interesting Smokey, maybe I'll take the cat out too when the time comes.
Does taking it out affect the computer at all?

Thanx again for the cool info Smokey. Fisherguy, taking the cat out of the 06 does not effect the computer.

I have used the Donaldson 51" with the baffle. It is very simple to straighten the baffle inside. If you have access to a metel oxygen bottle valve cover you can place that inside the muffler and use a heavy pipe to drive it past the baffle to open it up. Since the top of the valve cover is rounded it makes it open up perfectly... no complaints. The reason I have done this is because it is easier to pick up a baffled Donaldson in my area instead of ordering the offroad one. Good luck.

Oh yeah if you want to remove the cat thats your choice. I have heard the Donaldson 51" with and without the kitty... I think keeping it on keeps it closer to stock with a deep smooth sound. It is more raspy with the cat off. Guess just my opinion though..

Thanx TXDRAM. I will have to see the inside of the muffler to completely understand. I will see it Tuesday. I think I will take some photos and post them so everyone can see.
Thanx.

It looks like a shallow pyramid like cone directly in the air stream, w/ a bunch of holes in it. It is very restrictive if you compare the manufacturers flow charts. The muffler would be a strait through Magnaflow type w/o the baffle. I would definately wait for the offroad version.

Thanx TCR. According to a post in this older thread on the Donaldson & Nelson 51" mufflers, the flow specs are pretty close to one another. Read the one thread by Doug.

Thanx.

Hmmm, sounds like leaving the cat in would sound better, but that wouls make the tail pipe angle kinda wonky wouldn't it?

Has anyone taken the cat off, knocked out the guts and put it back on?
