Started at 40, and over the last couple months has worked it's way to 80psi.

Could it be a bad gauge?
It's a mechanical auto meter gauge, and when I shut the truck off, the needle stays at 65 --won't go back to 0.

sounds like a faulty gauge to me....check it with a known good mechanical...

Totally agree with 53. When a mechanical gauge will not go back to 0 then there is an issue. Staying at 65 is a big issue.
