Gauge ?'s
Gauge ?'s
I need some help guys, tommorrow I am planning on drilling and tapping my pyro and boost. I would like to know what tools are needed to drill and tap those? What kind of drill bit, any special kind? I dont have a tap, how much do they run? Do they make a spray lube for the drilling to keep things cool? I am installing the pyro pre turbo for an accurate reading, and would like to know about the taping the exhaust pipe method of blowing the shavings out, how do you do that, how much tailpipe do I tape off?
To drill and tap, the right size drill and tap depend on the size of the probes. Mine were both 1/8" NPT. If that is what you have you need the type "R" drill bit and the 1/8" NPT tap. I will get flamed for this but I just drill and tap the exhaust manifold, then start the engine and idle for a minute to pass any shavings that may have entered the manifold. I've done it this way on 3 trucks with no problems. I did remove the air horn when I drilled and tapped for the boost gauge. The drill and tap cost me $14 together.
Graphite:
I am ready to do mine. This is what I have done. Went to Sears and got an 11/32 drill bit and a 1/8 tap NPT (also picked up a 5/16 bit won't use it). Make sure the tap is with the corresponding drill bit. The tap will say what drill bit is to be used with it. Mine came as a set. You can get it at any auto store too. I also picked up some anti-sieze that I will put on the fitting before I screw them in. My Pyro and Boost fitting are the same size (ISSPRO Gauges). I have already built my wiring harness for all the guages, all that is left is for me to tap and hook up the connections back to the gauges. I got a steel plate and drilled it and tapped it for practice. I feel very comfortable now. I tried the 5/16 and the 11/32, I chose to go with the 11/32 bit. This is also my first time drilling into the boost elbow and manifold. Just take your time and you will be fine.
