Fuel Milage/ performance chip?

Hello, Looking for a little help or advice. Have a 2004 4x4 quad with the 5.9l6 and automatic. I have had several(gas) Dodge Rams and remember when I first got this that it was a real dog, but my first diesel and understand that they drive and feel different, I guess. anyhow I got used to it but the milage never seemed to come through? Bought with 24000 miles and know have 89,000 but only get 16.5mpg. I do see here were guys get from 17.5 up to 22mpg? I was considering the Hypertech Max Energy? Anyone recommend this? Can I keep stock exhaust system? I have stock air intake also. I did not want to spend a ton of money and have it take 5 years just to break even? Any advice would be great.

Mark

Smarty Jr helps a bit but, you have to drive nice. Driving style makes the biggest difference in milage. Stock tires properly inflated nothing added onto truck to catch wind. I can get darn good milage if I don't pass every one keep my speed at 65. It takes a little doing but it's not that hard.

I am new to the diesel also and from what I've read, to get mpg's you need to have 3:73 gears and keep the rpm's below 2,000

Gears are 3.73. Ordered the Hypertech. Was thinking about doing the airbox mod. Now concerned if I need to get an EGT gauge? Planning on just running it mostly in the fuel milage mode, but if i'm going through the mountains or steeping on it a little do I need to worry greatly about exhaust temp. Also is my stock exhaust system good enough? Any advice would be great. Thanks.
