Emissions Exempt in Colo.

I don't get what the big deal with CATS being on or off is when you should have a sticker like this in pretty much anywhere but Calif. Colorado couldn't do this if it was against Federal Law or, for one thing, they'd lose all their Fed. hiway funds. This is on my '05 which was delivered new to a dealer in Denver where they have emissions testing. The western part of the state does not have testing for gas or diesel vehicles so cats are a moot point over here. Any one else got a sticker like this on their truck?

So, if a guy didn't have one on a 2500 CTD and the law stopped him what would be the beef? Just not having the sticker? If the guy went to the testing center could he get one? Would they require a CAT even if it was over 6K and, therefore, exempt?
I'm corn-fused!

Roger that. This all came up because someone over there went to get tested when he shouldn't have. I mean if they are exempt then no CAT needed.....Right? By the way, I went to CSC down on Orman in the 60s right after it changed from Pueblo Jr.; Pueblo was a really good time in those days!

Cat is required on that vehicle by federal law. If local law doesn't require emissions tests, that doesn't mean you are exempt from emissions regulations the federal government required for that vehicle.
The sticker you have only makes the vehicle exempt from inspection for the first 5 years or until you sell the vehicle, then you have to get the emissions tested every 2 years if you are in the Denver Metro area.
Taking off your Cat is your business, but it was put there in the first place for a good reason, reducing hazardous emissions. Removing the Cat is against federal law if you operate the vehicle on state or federal roads.

I still have my Exempt sticker from purchasing my truck in Aurora CO. Now I live in Maui and no emissions testing, heck all they looked at was the lights and made sure the horn worked. Kitty is staying right where it is.

Roger that. I was just having trouble seeing how the Feds could require something on vehicles nationwide while states can negate the requirement. I guess it's one of those 'mysteries of life' in America.

.

Note: Emissions exempt doesn't mean that you don't have to have the required equipment. It means that you are exempt from testing for the first 5 years.

Good comment. Federal law overrides any local law. Local law can't override federal. That means that nowhere can you take off your cat and still operate the vehicle on State or Federal property. I also doubt that local law allows it either, they just don't check for it. So, no state law doesn't negate federal.

However....
Here's a good one (Fact):
In Denver it is legal (YES, LEGAL) to have an ounce of weed or less according to Denver city law. Federal law states that it is still illegal. That means the local authorities can't arrest you for it, but they can stall you until the federal police arrive to arrest you for breaking federal law. Nice hunh?!?

See where I am we dont have emissions or inspections on Diesel vehicles and in some counties gas vehicles dont have emissions or inspections either. I dont have to bring it anywhere to get it re-registered for the next year just pay the money get my new sticker and im done. Now not saying that I can remove my cat or anything but just stating that we dont have the inspections/emissions here.
