EGT Too HOT!
EGT Too HOT!
I am racking my brain on what could be wrong with the setup I have:
2004 Dodge 1 ton
6 speed manual
Edge EZ Performance Module w/boost elbow installed
Cold Air Intake
4" exhaust (turbo back)
EGT --tapped pre-turbo in exhaust manifold
I pull a 34' fifth wheel -- it is probably 14000lbs loaded out.
I can't keep the EGT below 1050. It will jump up into the 1250-1300 range all day long. I live in Central TX (Austin) and the hills around here are pretty pathetic when you compare them to Colorado & New Mexico. I am terrified to get this rig out of TX due to the exhaust temps.
I have tried all of the settings with the Edge and none of them make a difference. Believe it or not, it actually runs cooler when it is set on the performance setting.
I am confused & any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Your 2004 engine has 3 injection events. Pilot shot, main shot and a post shot for emissions control. The post shot occurs very late in the cycle and contributes to much higher exhaust temps than on an engine without the post shot. Basically the EGTs on these engines are not comparable with prior engines. People in the know have said you can run these engines to 1400+F (pre turbo) without any issues.
Thanks, that makes me feel much better. Because I still have all of the power, but was backing off of the throttle because I thought I would burn up the turbo.
Thanks again for the help

I had this problem when I first installed TST and found that the boost was not high enough because of a defective fitting they supplied to go to wastegate. I did not know that 26PSI was bad now have 35PSI and don't hav EGT problem or smoke issues.
I can run 1300 with a load and the box turned off. I dont think anything of running that all day if need be. If i turn the box on to the low setting it will hit 1400-1450 real easy. I dont like that but am under the understanding it doesent hurt at all. If I put it on the high setting while towing anything it will go past 1500 without even thinking twice. Needles to say I dont run it on the high setting. It will go that high with a heavy foot empty if I dont wach it.

I too have problems with egt's going over 1200...but have got to know what my engine needs to keep cooler...
The following is from hauling a 7000lb toyhauler: While in 4th gear, rpm's under 2000 and doing 60mph, I can easily overheat while climbing a hill. at this time, to cool the egt's I hit the tow/haul button to grab 3rd and go around 57mph while the egt's approach 950 from the increased boost pressure.
If I'm in 4th doing 72+ and get a good run at a 20-30 degree incline the engine will stay around 1000 if my rpms are in the 2000's. my boost pressure is around 25-30psi while doing so...
From seeing that, I think egt's also have alot to do with setting up for the hill at the right speed...

the 305/555 is safe up to 1350 degrees pre turbo SUSTAINED, the 325/600,610's are allright to 1450 deg. momentarily higher is alright, I have seen 1600 deg.+ for a few seconds. on multiple occasions.
