Egt Probe Location

I am installing a pre turbo egt probe and i see diesel manor recomends it in the manifold collector above the turbo flange. they also give an alternate location on top of the manifold reading cylinders 1-3 and they say it will read alot higher here.

what is the best location? i would think it should be up top closest to the cylinder head to get the highest reading since we want to know the temps coming from the cylinders, correct?

also if mounted close to the head to get the highest reading what max sustained temp am i looking for, 1300 deg.? and possibly higher spikes for very short periods of time? sorry for all the questions, i have been reading post turbo until now, thanks.

Most ppl mount it at the collector, I would say for a more combined temperature reading of all the cylinders. I have mine setup this way also.

Some ppl have seen up to 1700* with a probe at the collector, 1500* nominal, but it really isn't so much how hot it gets, but how long you let it stay up there. Personally, I don't let my truck pass 1350*, but with the Smarty it has never gone that far anyways.

i have mine in the collector, and it takes alot longer to reach cool down temp (350), than my friends. his is located near cyl#3.

from what i understand, cyl#5$6 run alot hotter, maybe thats why mine takes so long to show the same temp.

question of the day
with that being said, should i be shutting down mine earlier, or should he be shutting his down later?
