EGT probe install
EGT probe install
I am in the middle of mounting my Quad Commander and am doing the egt probe install at this point; all drilling went well per the instructions. I am having one heck of a time however with tapping the exhaust manifold; I can't get it right. The instructions say not to go all the way through, as the coupler is tapered. I have about 3-4 threads visible on the manifold, but coupler no goey. Upon closer examination of the tap, I may have some buggered threads. Any body got an idea. Can I drive this way with the hole still there? Need to go try another tap but don't know if I should drive it. Please assist. Thanks
Wow. It'll be loud with that hole right there. I would also be concearned with starting a fire. There will be alot of heat coming out of that hole.
Are you using the tap with a handle (not in a drill) and plenty of cutting oil? Also, with tapping a cast piece, you gotta take your time.
Also do you have the exact right size drill bit for the tap? Usually has "Use Drill xx/xx" stamped on the tap itself.

the reason for not going to deep is because the manifold is not very thick and if you go to deep the probe will be loose, go one turn at a time with the tap until the fitting will start
The problem was with my cheapo chinese made tap; my neighbors had a much better thread. As I remember, it was about this time last year I used the same one on a nightmare diff drain plug on my polaris ranger and must have really chewed it up. Probe now in place; thanks for the help; just gotta finish my wiring once the rain gets out of here
