Dodge Steering Stabilizer
Dodge Steering Stabilizer
Well, just bought me a DSS; that steering stabilizer that ties the frame rails together and supports a bearing for sector shaft.
I’ve never had the death wobble, but this truck has always has a slight case of the wonders. It was never enough to put you in the ditch, but just enough to be annoying and make me look like a DUI candidate.
While I was at it I threw on a Rancho 5000 steering damper too, probably not the best unit, but better than stock. The Rancho made the steering a bit stiffer; the DSS took away a lot of the wonder and gave me another grease fitting.
I can’t wait for my next road trip to see how it does down the highway.
The steering boxes on these things look like it should be on a small car, not a heavy pickup truck.
You can tell the bean counters were all over these things.
I’m hopping the DSS will add some life to may steering box. I measured about .015” of play in the sector shaft with just light pressure on the wheel in the driveway before the DSS.
I didn’t measure it after for I was too excited to drive it, however I can assure you that it is much less.

I had a DSS on my old 01.5 and loved it. It was probably one of the best mods I did to that truck. It really tightened up the steering and made the truck so much easier to control. I have been thinking about adding one to my 05.

Mine came from here:

It took about 30-min to put on. Take off the old pitman arm nut, but on the new DSS nut, drop the sway bar, put the DSS unit in place, align put back up the sway bar, put the bearing and bearing retainer on, grease and you are all set.
The thing even comes painted.

No, they just make it a little more tricky to install it all together because of the extra pieces, but there is no interference.
