Debating on trading my 2nd Gen for a 3rd Gen
Hey guys,
i have an 02 quad cab short bed as in my sig below, i want the versatility of the new 3rd gen quad cab but enjoy my body style also,
so i guess what i would like to know is what kind of mileage you guys are getting to see if it would be worth a trade?
i can get over 20 highway right now
any other positives you guys have seen if you have made the switch?
thanks in advance
joe

I just sold my 01 6 speed with a bunch of mods(injectors, Juice, AFE, 4" exhaust, leveling kit, 315s). I also ran AMSOIL in everything.
I just bought an 03.5 with the HO and 48 RE. So far I'm a lot happier. A lot better quality IMO. A lot quieter, although I'm not sure I like that. I've only had it for about two weeks. This truck has the Kore leveling kit and 285s. Only other thing I've put on so far is the Smarty JR in the 70 hp setting. Mileage seems a little bit better or close to the same.
I was getting 17 or so over the winter on my commute(about 12 miles which is half city and half faster two lane 70 MPH). First two fillups have been 17 and 18 with the 03. I was getting 19-21 on the highway with my 01. Hoping to see the same next time I'm on the highway.
I also plan on changing the diffs and engine over to AMSOIL. And I'm going to add an intake, 5" exhaust, torque converter and valvebody which should improve mileage slightly.
I've heard the 04.5-07s are a little harder on fuel but I wouldn't hesitate to get one. I just happened to get a good deal on this 03. $22,600 with 57k, laramie with heated leather, navigation, posi, power pedals, 285 BFG ATs, KORE lift with remote reservoir Fox shocks all the way around, AMP steps, and rollback tonneau.

A 3rd Gen auto getting same or better mileage as a 2nd Gen 6 speed?? Maybe on an 03...but no other year!
I have heard some horror stories about 3rd Gen mileages.... very few good reports!
I have driven many 3rd Gens and love them. Better steering, Better tranny (G56 and Auto), quiet can be nicer around town and newer is always fun.
I would not go newer than the 06's. JMO.

The 03 early 04s are known for good mileage
The 04.5 on up is not known as well, but there are plenty of reports of between 16 and 20.
My buddy has an 06 with G56 and 34" tires and he can get 18-20 taking it easy. When new he was getting 14-16. Then added the bullydog and taller tires(gearing is very low in the G56) and mileage picked up.

on the freeway I see 20+ MPG easy, its around town with the smarty that kills your mileage because of my heavy foot but I still average 18 MPG and thats with just about 50/50 highway/city driving

ditching all my Gen 2 trucks for my Gen 3 best thing i ever did.
though i sure wish they offered options like Gen 3 with a 215hp 12v 6spd on top of the Common rail 24v that works so well.... but the day of mechanical motors is long gone that and hubs are my only two gripes
Stock turbo and Mild TQ Smarty with 315's and 3.73s and 6spd on my 03 i got 21-22 highway and 19 city
HTT62/12 and smarty MOD TQ i get 18 city 20 highway since adding hubs 21-22 highway 18-19 city

I would say 2nd gen 24 valves are similar to 03-04 and the 600s can be close but sometimes a tad lower.
12 valve should get better mileage then 600 but otherwise they should all be within 2 MPG.

Joe - I would take what GlenRMK says as gospel! I would trade for many reasons..... but not for mileage!
There have been many mileage threads over the last few yrs. No offense to any other members but we all remember, and tend to report, that one trip where we were all hwy and had a tailwind... downhill.
I once got 18.7 mph on my automatic, coming back from Barstow, California. When asked about mileage, I often mention it.
But when I do a 1,000 mile test, over 10 days - two weeks, and refill at the same pump.... I get 16.5 - 16.7 mpg!
If your over 20 mpg hwy now, and mileage is important, I'd stay with what I have. JMO.
