Commander - Water temp sensor

I have had the commander for a while now and the water temp has always been about 15° - 20° lower than what it should be. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have contacted Quadzilla several times now but haven't gotten anywhere with that. I love the commander so far and this isn't that big of a deal but it seems like it should be reading closer to the actual temp.

Don't know, mine reads 188-190 when up to temp.

Mine is reading 170 - 173 when up to temp. But in the mornings when it is 60 out it will read 40 - 45. So that is how I know it is definately reading low.

The commander is just reading the voltage off the OEM sensor. Aside from having a bad connection, I would say it's most likely your OEM sensor is just reading a little off.

When mine is up to temp I see the same thing as Lrdchaos, between 188* and 190*. At that point the stock gauge is setting on the 1/2 mark or about 200*.

How is the boost read? It's just taped into a wire, right?

Yes, it's tapped into a wire and uses the OEM sensor.

The only sensors added are EGT, Trans Temp and lift pump fuel pressure (optional)

The Fuel Pressure is very easy.

Tranny sensor is easy, but you gotta crawl under the truck.

EGT requires drilling and tapping the manifold.

This can be tricky. I magnatized and greased the drill bits and also had a pen magnet to put in the hole and get shavings out. They recommend drilling a 1/8" pilot hole first... I bought NEW bits just to be sure it would go smoothly... when teh 1/8" bit went through, it broke off I thought my worst nightmare just came true and I'd have to pull the manifold. I went ahead and started drilling the big hole thinking I might be able to fish it out with the magnet. Once I drilled the big one a little, I could see the tip of the 1/8 bit still in the hole. Used some fine point needle nose pliers and got it out and saved my weekend

So I guess I'm saying that if you have a good 21/64ths bit, you might consider skipping the pilot hole part

Without actually seeing the truck personally it is hard to say.

The first thing I would ask is pretty obvious. Did you select the correct vehicle from the menu?

Secondly I would tell you that it is very possible it is reading correctly.

We have the factory specs on the sensor calibrations that we use. Then in testing we compared it to the DRB and several other OBD tools to verify the readings.

Now your sensor could be slightly off as well?

I can tell you that we are going to have the online updating live on the website and we can definately make some changes. I would not want to make any changes unless we know it is wrong. You absolutely cannot go off of the factory gauge, it is not even close. If you have access to a scan tool of some sort, I would definately like to hear if it is really off.

Boost is the only function I have not been able to get to work on mine so far. I do have the wire tapped that the instructions said to tap but all I get is a 0 reading all the time. I have checked and I do have a good connection at the tap.

Hunter11,

Don't you need to turn on the sensor or something for it to work? Or is that only for added sensors like the fuel pressure unit? Just a thought.

Since you have one of our modules make sure you tapped the dark blue wire on the MAP sensor.

Also the only other thing I have seen is that sometimes the spade will miss the tap and slide over it, sort of bending the spade out of the way. Look inside the actual spade connector (pink shielded connector on the blue wire) and make sure it is going into the tap.

If that is still not it call us and we can help you figure it out.

You do not have to turn boost on. Just transmission and fuel pressure.

Also all of the Commanders we have shipped are tested on the bench and then tested on an actual truck to make sure all the parameters are functioning properly, so we should be able to solve the problem over the phone!

Quad, I will check everything again this weekend and let you know what I find. By memory I am pretty sure it is on the blue wire but as you said maybe the spade is bent.

Just to update, I did recheck this past weekend and I did have the blue wire tapped. I undid the tap and moved it about 1/2 down the blue wire and retapped it and I now have good boost readings. I guess the first tap did not make good contact with the wire but all is well now.

I saw 20 psi on a big hill coming in this morning with the cruise set at 65 mph. I will nail it once going home just to see what I get at WOT. I will post it when I get home.
