gdh11,
First, welcome aboard. Second, the best performance mod you can do right now is to put about 10k miles on it. Mine runs considerably better now (~28k) than it did when new.

Agreed! I have almost 6k miles on mine now and it seems to be getting stronger all the time. Fuel mileage is going up each time I fill up also. ;D

Re:Cheap Mods on 04 HO?

I got 10,500 miles and still get 16 mpg with an unloaded truck! :'(

I did put the Bully Dog box in earlier this week and made a huge difference in power. That whole thing cost me $1,000 including the gauges.

Re:Cheap Mods on 04 HO?

At 10K miles I am now getting 18-18.5 MPG unloaded. When my rig was brand new it was more like 17-17.4

Re:Cheap Mods on 04 HO?

if you disable the wastegate , wont you set overboost codes?

I know you would on a 2nd gen without using a boost fooler

Re:Cheap Mods on 04 HO?

The 03 and 04 Cummins have a bit of a unique program in them for overboost. We haven't set a check engine light yet, however without a fooler, each time you overfuel, the ECM remembers and will keep cutting fuel back until the boost remains in the 24 - 26 range. The effect is so gradual, that you may not even notice the power loss until you hook up a trailer or do something that requires more power.
