Question Cam Question for Don M

Don,

I currently have the ATS "Towing Cam" and have been very interested in your Helix cams. Is there an advantage in switching to the Helix cams (I would assume would want Helix 2 over 3, but that is my next question) and what kind of differences would be noticed? I have been so pleased with your injectors that I am very interested in your cams!

the Helix 3 is for serious pullers that have big fuel( usually a p-pump) and 4000+ RPM's, which most of us dont have.

What's the difference between the Helix 2 & 3 regarding duration, lobe centers, ramp profiles, gross lifts, etc.?

Obviously, nothing proprietary - just generalities/trends....

what is a p-pump? I always hear about it. What gives you 4000+RPMs? I would think you would need the engine balanced, ported, polished, and some other stuff to rev that high safely, right?

P-pump is a mechanical pump for the 12V Cummins... and besides adequate fueling, and assuming the ECM will allow it - you need valvesprings to reach 4 grand....

did I hear Don mention F-1 springs?

P.S. D - I just realized you might not realize that high-rpm airflow mods which a normally aspirated high-revving gasser would need aren't as important on our turbocharged diesels.

Also, the CTD is a very stout engine, so 4K RPM "ain't much"...

Reciprocating assembly stresses increase according to the square of the rpm, so 4000 rpm is four times harder on the reciprocating assembly than 2000 rpm.

So do you think that I could benefit from either the Helix 2 or 3? Would I need any other mods?

definately a Helix 2 cam and springs. if you are a dedicated puller or dyno queen, which you are not, then you would want to go with a helix 3. I dont know of many helix 3's out there currently

hope this helps

I am going with a helix 2 and springs with my motor

Cool, I have been very happy with the springs so I am sure I will like the Helix 2!

What difference will there be over the ATS Towing Cam?

I have no idea what the ATS towing cam does. I would venture to say that the Helix 2 is probably more aggressive from bottom to top.
I used to have a Scheid street cam and the Helix 2 is much more aggressive OVERALL...ie higher lift and more duration.
