Buying trucks from other states - pain in rear?
If there was a killer truck deal on e-bay, but many states away, what pains would CA give me? Whatever the problems are, I bet CA is the most annnoying. Everything in CA is expensive and usually calls for paperwork and waiting in lines.
Just bought my 05 Labor day in Utah. Brought it home had to pay the tax and have it weighed. It was no hassle at all for me, but it was expenive. Check out http://www.wattsautomotive.com/ these guy treated me rite.
didn't buy in CA
I was dealing with the Dodge Dealer in elk Grove CA, and thought I had a pretty good deal going. I was working with the internet/Fleet manager guys.
when the time came to talk about delivery and costs, etc, they actually wanted me to pay CA tax and go to the State of Or to get reimbursed. then he wanted me to pick it up in CA, whch meant a CA delivery, and full taxes.
That is NOT how it works. I told him to forget it, and wrangled the same deal at the Medford OR Dodge dealer. He even threw in the bed spray-on liner.
BTW, if yoiu Californians buy from an Oregon dealer, you will STILL have to pay CA taxes when you register it, or will be taxed at the dealer if you tell them you live in CA.

Out of state purchase.
I special ordered my '07 through Dave Smith Motors in Idaho. Even with transportation costs of sending it down here to San Diego,I saved plenty. They provide all the paperwork to get it registered it Ca. We must have a Ca certified vehicle to make it work,or used with 7500 miles. I'll have to weigh it and pay tax and license here. DSM as of a few days ago had 300+ 5.9's in stock or on order. I have been well treated. P.M. me for any questions or salesperson.
I picked up my 05 back in August from a guy in Ohio. The only pain I had to deal with was the sellers signature had to be notarized for Florida to accept it. This isn't a Florida rule, it was an Ohio rule. Anyone who's anyone can sign a title in Florida and it's considered legit. Ohio requires notarization of the sigature. The problem was that I received the title without the notarization, so it was about a 3-4 week process before I got the truck titled and past temp tag registration. Other than that, the only other issue was driving a truck with illegal plates from OH to FL!! Florida won't issue a temp tag until I can show a bill of sale AND proof there is no lein from the previous owner. I couldn't get this because the seller needed my funds to pay off the truck, so a temp tag was not an option. The seller didn't want to let me drive on his plates, so I brought my F-150 plate with me and drove the speed limit all the way home.
It was the only way to find a 2005, NV5600, in white, QC, 4WD, short bed, under 10k miles (which were my requirements). SO, given the fact that I found exactly what I wanted (minus maybe one or two options), it wasn't too bad of a hassle.

you are going to pay registration and sales tax in california no matter where you buy it. but from what I have heard if you can get 7500 miles on it before you register it in cali you will not have to pay the sales tax do not know tha particulars but I think you need to have it registered out of state as well post sale prior to registering in cali. Friend pulled it off with his durajoke.
sales tax.

Ended up getting my '96 from Lenz Auto in Wisconsin, easiest vehicle purchase yet. Got a 3 month WI temp tag without paying WI tax just a $15 title fee, they arranged delivery to me and overnighted all the paperwork. Deal was sealed in 3 days and had the truck in 8 days. All the dealers in CO think a "real" truck is gas, shortbed and automatic after visiting 4 dealers and calling 45 here I went to Lenz. I will have to pay the taxes when I tag it at our DMV, all they will do is a VIN verification since we have no emissions in Park County.
CA Sales tax, etc.,
With that significant of a sales tax (8.75% now? i.e. tax on $42K = $3675) and all the DMV fees I would be surprised if some people didn't establish a residence in Oregon (no sales tax), for example.
Humm... The phony bill of sale, never heard of it
But that would be hard to get from a dealer. I have bought many, many trucks from down south as the ones up here in Indiana are rust within a few years so I actually only consider looking in Texas. And as long as you have a bill of sale your personal plate off another car/ truck is legal for 31 days, just like a paper one from dealer, as long as it is yours and current. You just have to have the bill of sale with you if you get pulled over. So you would be better off finding one from a person than a dealer, and maybe you could ask them to fib or leave the price blank on the title/bill of sale to save some taxes, out of state or not.

It is a pain but worth it if you save alot of money. I hate dealing with this crap though.
I just bought my truck from a dealer out of state. I flew down there and drove it back 800 miles. So I got it from GA, instead of letting me pay my sales tax, it must be a state law for the dealer to collect the tax, then mail me a check for the tax made out to my DMV. That is just stupid and annoying, I was wondering if they were really going to mail me the check, but they did 16 days later. With the MSO. I take the MSO down to the DMV, and the ODO section has to be notorized, so I have to send that back to the dealer 800 miles later wondering if they are going to lose it or ever get around to notorizing it. Luckily for me, they took care of it right away.
Here is where I got ******. The DMV here would not give me an extended temp tag, so if the dealership wanted to drag their feet for this notorization that only my state seems to require, I would not be able to legally drive my truck. I hate being held hostage by the beaurocracy.
