Bully Dog PowerPug and the Van Aaken?

I'm sure someone has posted and I apologize for not making note of it. Who has stacked the two, PowerPup and VanAaken, and what were the results? I'm considering the switchable one, smartbox 3.2 or 3.1. I think the 3.1 is the pressure box. What does the Van Aaken do to the fuel pressure? I'm not a big fan of raising the fuel pressure but as long as it's in moderation, I'll bite. I just don't want to go to the Banks. Sorry, but that's too close or at service limit.

I stacked the pup on extreme mode with the VA duration box. It seemed to do OK with the VA on level 1, but the engine did not like it with the VA on level two. If you go by advertised HP claims, that is 210 extra horsepower via duration alone. If you go by dyno verified HP numbers, that is still 180hp via duration alone, and the Bully Dog still ads 50hp from pressure on top of that. That is more duration than the TST and I doubt very seriously that the pup does as much timing advance as the TST, so it is understandable that the engine did not like it. Your getting into a retarded timing effect at that point, doing more harm than good and probably loosing potential HP just as the guys stacking too much with the TST. It slipped my overdrive clutch packs in the tranny doing hard pulls from 60 to 80. $$. The only good part is with the aggressive low end of the pup stacked with the extra duration of the VA on level 1, it felt like my original aggressive TST box. It was fun, but you wouldn't want to do that with the stock turbo.

One interesting note is from talking with Bully Dog about stacking with pressure boxes, they made it sound as though the pressure will not be compounded. Since you already have 50hp from pressure (in extreme mode), you will not get the first 50hp from whatever pressure box you stack with it, only what is left above that. I guess that is not the same with duration. The Bully Dog already gives you 80hp from duration, but put the VA on level 1 (roughly 50hp) and hold on. Weird. I guess that is why Bully Dog did not recommend stacking with a duration box....like we ever listen anyway.

If you don't mind paying that much money for another 50hp, it will work, but stay away from level 2. There is a point where extending the injection event becomes unhealthy. That is the kind of stuff that makes things go boom. Rumor has it that Bully Dog is suppose to bump the pup up another 50hp in the coming weeks and make the new program available via internet download, but no idea on how they intend to do that, via pressure or duration. If they do it via pressure, I don't think I'll play.

I wonder if or how much they'll charge for that. They already charge $300 for the Crappymax super kill version.

They have some issues to work out like this flat spot between 1900 and 2200 RPMs. Updates like that are expected to be free. I would expect to pay a little something for an extra 50hp, but hopefully not too much. Hopefully we will know soon enough.

It doesn't seem to make sense stacking a duration box with the pup - I thought the pups were light on rail pressure so you could stack an EZ or comparable pressure box..

Why not? I suspect they are light on rail pressure because they also sell a 100hp pressure box that they tout as a good stack with the pup. Get the picture? Wouldn't want to put their own product out of business. That's just speculation of course.

You currently get 50hp from pressure and 80hp from duration. That leaves a lot of room in both categories for more. The RAMifier is doing 130hp via pressure and the TST is doing 160+ via duration....as an indication of how much more room there is. Extending duration is less of a strain on injector seals and stuff, so that seemed like the logical way to go for someone like myself that would prefer to stay away from high pressures if possible. Personal preference. So what I found out is adding another 50hp from duration is just plain wicked and very doable, however, adding an additional 100hp from duration is too much. That will be nice to know on race day when I need to borrow a box and stack to get bragging rights.

I guess it's doable, it just seems hard on the truck to me. Some folks don't consider that though, they just want the most power they can squeeze out while having safe egt's. I think I'm with you AK on the 'room for duration' however I don't believe there is 130 SAFE hp in pressure increases.. I guess it's there, however I don't think it's prudent that anyone ride the rail limits that closely..sooner or later POP!

I would be more interested in the results of combining the VanAaken Pressure Box with the Bully Dog. If I understood all the posts, the B/D uses only duration (no pressure) on the lowest setting-Tow, and duration with only slightly more pressure than stock on the Performance setting. The VanAaken is known to be a mild pressure box with its biggest gains in the lower rpm range. I would like to see someone combine these two "boxes" together.

I'm more worried about the so called 'flat spot' with the bullydog DL. This thing sounded so great at first however it appears to be 'buggy' like the other boxes. I'm not sure if there is a box out there that offers good performance with no codes or negative side effects.. Maybe the edge ez, lol.

Does the Bully Dog do any timing at all? I thought i read somewhere that it does some timing and duration with slight pressure increase?

Just did the VA C3.1 - Power Pup stack yesterday. It's smooooth power! I wish I would have found out about the VA boxes sooner (Note - temper my comments with the fact I have not run any other pressure-only box). Check out my post on TDR:

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...d.php?t=120812

I would love to dyno my truck to see exactly what's happening as opposed to the butt-o-meter-dyno, but the nearest dyno's are at least 4 hour away in Boise or Salt Lake City.
