Building 500-600hp truck, have questions

I am in the process of buying and building a new truck. Looking at either an 06' or 07' 5.9. I want to be in the 500-600hp range and have a few questions as I am unfamiliar with the Gen 3's. I think I am going with twins, DTT tranny, smarty, modified CP3 and either injectors or stacking a TST. Like I said, I am really unfamiliar with the new 5.9 and all the goodies so my question is, does this seem like a good route to go to accomplish my goal? Is there better boxes to stack or injectors that work much better than others? Also, what kind of fuel mileage loss/gain should I expect to see and is there a cut off point(ie-500hp. vs 550hp. vs 600hp) where mileage and drivability really start to drop off or is there a point when the cost of making the power really rises? Obviosuly I will run all the gauges, exhaust, intake, and fuel mods I need to accomodate the power. Thanks in advance!

Is it a good idea going with the twins? Do I need a modified CP-3?

Twins are awesome,, just big bucks. To get into 600's you should have at least a stage 2 cp3

Yes your goon a need a modified fuel system and cp3.. THe stock system can't keep up.. I just got my box of goodies from Larry at DTR.. New Fuel system!!! You don't need twins to achieve that goal.. Smarty is a must!! and a pressure box.. From there you'll need injectors, tranny.. I am getting injectors, modified cp3, dual feed line and goona see where that puts me.. After that if I choose spray then I will but trying to get 700+ on #2 only!!!

Where would I be with the twins, Smarty, MP-8 and modified CP3? This may be enough for me, don't klnow if I need the injectors; or am I better off getting injectors and dumping the MP-8? Also, how is my fuel mileage affected by each of these mods?

My mileage is awesome. Still well over the 20 mpg mark. One thing I have learned about doing mods,, do it right the first time,, ends up costing much less in the long run.

What do you want to do with this truck? Race, tow, ?

Plan on using it as a daily driver. Tow a lite load on the weekends in the winter, but otherwise nothing special. I just want a fast truck!! Do twins get any better mileage then a single?

Mainly drivability and cooling when towing at lower rpm's.

if you plan to get an 07 TST was having some issues with 06.5 and newer trks. just letting you know. I dont know if things are fixed now or not. I have a tst to install on my 06 when I get a new turbo. I would say if you tow anything heavy or tow much at all twins turbos are the way to go. you will get some surge from a big single charger.

Shane,

Am I correct in reading your mods that your are putting down 572 HP with the stock 48RE? It looks like you do a lot of towing. Do you put it back to stock for towing or run smarty #9 all the time. I though anything over smarty #3 and you were looking at slipping the stock 48RE? If the above is true, what is your secret for not ripping the 48RE to pieces?

Thanks,

Nathan

Nathan,

I am not Shane, but I can tell you what I do. I run on #9 all the time on a stock 48RE. IF you abuse it, it will tear up. If you just wait until the torque converter is locked it will go awhile. At least that is my experience. I may be playing with fire but the 48RE is a pretty tough transmission. Mine has never slipped or hiccuped in any way. Keep in mind that I do plan to have it built right in the future....but while im saving my money to do it right, im going to drive it sensibly....have a little bit of fun with it on the highway and keep up with the maintenance.

If you go out here and do boosted launches and enter burnout contests, it won't last long. Drive sensibly, it may last 200,000 miles even with Smarty on 9.
