Broken connecting rod!

Not on my truck, Thank god

Just sold my friend my tri-dog and outlook monitor for his 05 3500 I've had laying around for 6 months.Put it on about 2 weeks ago.He went to Georgia to pick up some hay and broke a connecting rod while coming back loaded down.Came thru the oil pan.Said it gave no warning.Running great one second broke the next.Still up in the air if warranty is going to cover it.I really hate it for him. This was his first taste of aftermarket performance and I know its a sour one at that.I've been trying to explain it wasn't the tri-dogs fault but he's a little grumpy right now.

Has anyone seen any issues with connecting rods on these 3rd gens.I know I sure haven't herd of any.Making me wonder about mine!

After seeing a cummins rod up close I find it hard to believe. I hope he took all the goodies off it before going to the dealer!!!

I've seen a rod first hand also. These things are stout.I think the thing was probably bad from day 1, just decided to let loose with 40k miles on it.He did remove the downloader before it got towed to the local dealer. He talked with the mechanic and he said he would try his best to slide it thru but warned the shop manager might not be so cooperative if he noticed any mods(think the 5" ausssie stacks might throw up some flags).

One of the guys here at work, his dad has a 05 3500 and blew the rod out the front 2 weeks ago. Totally trashed the engine. His came out the side of the block and broke off the ECM. He towed it to his dealer and they denied warranty because he had a Fram filter on it. He pulls loaded extremely heavy (30k+) all the time and had about 85k on it. He was trying to find a complete engine to swap in but I dont think he found one suitable yet.

Chrysler specifically forbids the use of Fram oil filters on the Cummins engines. There is supposed to be a supplemental brochure in each Owner's Manual with details. Fram filters seat the paper pleats in neoprene, which comes apart under high temperature and pressure. The neoprene pieces plug the oil jets that cool the piston, causing all sorts of mayhem. Notice Chrysler isn't telling you which filter you must use, rather they're telling you which filter(s) you can't use.

You are exactly right. I think the truck had about 4 oil changes in its life and I know of 3 clutches put in from pulling too heavy. He has a scrap metal business and you know how those guys are

The oil filter thing.... there is a TSB about approved filters and pretty much just Fleetguard, Chrysler, and A/C Delco filters were recommended. There were more but those are the ones that I remember.

although Scheid runs some really high hp trucks.... I was shown what could happen to the rods. Some will be stressed so much they crack. It's a hair line crack but, they said the the 3rd rods are known to do it.

My solution and not that I needed them cause it over 1000hp where it's a concern but, Cummins also sells shot peens rods as a stock replacement. I figured while we were in there... it couldn't hurt to have them be a bit more stout than stock.

Yes Ford and G.M are tough on warranty also.Their not making any money and are following the guidelines they set down to a 'T".
