Bilstein question

I am running Bilstein 5100's schocks on my truck. The front right has been chewing up top bushings for some reason. What is the allen head bolt on top of the shock? What exactly does it do? Any suggestions what the heck is going on with me chewing up bushings?

Are you sure that you are not topping out your shocks,i.e. "too short" extended?

that allen head is just to hold the shock shaft in place so when you are tightening the nut, the shaft don't spin.

I am with moorepower, sounds like the shocks are too short pullin the busing thru

If he doesn't know what the allen bolt is for maybe they're not tight enough and are moving around in the hole getting chewed up?

When I replace the bushing I always use an allen wrench to make sure it is not spinning. Everything is good and tight. I bought the truck with the lift already on it. Are the 5100's the correct shocks for a 4 inch lift from Superlift. When yo usay "topping out" do you mean that they are the incorrect shock? What shock would be the right one?

Not the wrong shock, they might be too short. When you have a lift you have to get longer shocks. Maybe whoever put on the lift put on shocks that are too short.

I think the 5100's are only for a truck that is lifted 2".

jack it up and place stands under the frame, so the axle will hang. Now take the bottom shock bolts out and see if you can pull the shocks down further. If you can't, the shocks are too short.

What's the part number on the shock? I'll let you know if it is correct.

That's what I thought...0-2 inch lift.

Not trying to hijack the thread but what is the difference between the yellow and blue Bilstein and black and silver bilstein? I know the black and silver are for a 0-2" lift, but are they better than the yellow and blue. I was looking at Geno's Garage and seen the two different types. Time for shocks and I would like to go with the Bilstein shocks but not sure which one I should go with.

I think the yellow and blue are for 2wd and the silver and black are for 4wd? Or maybe the yellow and blue are for trucks that don't have any kind of a lift and the silver and black are good for a 2" lift.

Yellow ones are their HD ones, silver are the 5100's.

Would the HD shocks be better for a truck with a front end replacement? Or the 5100's?

I don't think you can get 5100's for a 2wd, I don't know what you have.
Maybe this will help:
