Bilstein 5100 or standard heavy duty?
Bilstein 5100 or standard heavy duty?
Which bilsteins would you guys go with on my truck, the 5100 series or the yellow/blue heavy duty shocks. Price difference is slim so it's just up to which ones ride better. I have just been doing a lot of searching and finding people complain about the 5100 being a little to stiff. Thanks
I am more than satisfied with my Bilsteins. I drove homewreckers with Bilsteins and axed him why his 05 rode 10 times better than my 06. He said Bilsteins. I cannot speak to the other shocks.
I have the standard Heavy Dutys under my '03 and have no complaints at all. I was gonna get the 5100's because I like the looks of them, but it was explained to me that the 5100's are designed for trucks with a mild lift and my truck is still sitting stock. No biggie, still a **** good shock.
Might as well get the 5100s for the price difference... not sure if you'll notice much of a change in ride.
I'm just getting around to replacing the original shocks on the '98 - after a quarter of a million hard miles!

Always seemed to ride fine (hey, it's big truck - right?), so didn't get around to swapping them.

the 5100's are 2 inches longer on the front for a leveling kit, but they will also work for a stock truck without damage to the shock. i was on the fence about these shocks but i bit the bullet and bought them... man does that bullet taste good, knowing what i know now i wouldn't even think once about getting the 5100's...awesome shocks...

Are you guys liking these things because they are great off road or because they are great on the road? I put Bilsteins on my 03 and never noticed any difference from stock! Now, I did buy them used and some had suggested that maybe they were damaged but they looked like they had hardly been used. These were the silver and black ones. My trucks never go off road BTW...
For myself, the stock shocks have typically completely worn out in 25,000-30,000 miles.
I had Ranchos that required all new bushing in under 1 year.
I have had good luck with Skyjacker Nitro series shocks lasting and holding up, with thwey had a stiff ride.
I am currently running the 5100s and think I am going to try some Fox shocks or some type of rezzy setup, especially from the front end.

we have the bilsteins and my dad tows a fifth wheel with the '03 i have the '05 and pull fifth wheel with atv trailer behind that. we have thousands of miles on them. no problems and ABSOLUTELY no complaints. actually the only complaint is waiting so long to do them...
5100's
go for it and get them from sean lorenz! he has the best shocks out there! something about his that is different than other 5100's. I cant beleve someone couldnt notice the difference? It was honsestly like night and day! also make sure you are running the right tire pressure! I run 35" toyo mts @ 45 in the front and 40 in the rear. Perfect ride. For summer i run bfg at's that is a load range d, this is never going to give you the same ride as a load range e! What exaggerates the problem is when you over inflate a d tire tring to get an e load rating! Jarring ride that wrecks havoc on everything. Another thing that effects the ride and handleing is the off set of your wheels, the farther you go the worse the handling period. I am on my 5th set of wheels and can tell you if you want an awsome handleing truck that gives a great ride call sean and get at least his shocks and run a e rated tire that has been properly ballanced and inflated.

There are two different part numbers for the 5100s up front on our trucks and one for the rears. As it was explained to me by the guys at KORE and Don Thuren one of the two fronts has a little more travel. Both will fit stck to 2.5 inches of lift. I have had both and ant tell the diff. Also i had them on my 01' and only changed yhem at 100000 because i felt guilty. They seem to be life of the rig quaility. Also I have had fox 2.0s, 2.5s, and bilstien 7100 reses and I think the 5100 is the best street ride and the bang for buck...hope that helps
