Best mods for mileage
I am a new CTD 2500 Quad Cab owner. (2004, 4x4, 3.73 rear end).
I need some advice on AFE filters and black boxes.
From reading this forum it seems that the AFE Proguard-7 is the filter of choice...but is that the drop in filter that simply replaces the stock filter, or is this the system that removes and replaces the OEM stuff?
If my goal is the BEST possible mileage, which of the aftermarket boxes is the best bet and why?
Towing is an occaisional 5500lb boat.
IF I am not going to tow the Empirte State Building or show off the increased power the black boxes provide, are extra gauges necessary?
Thanks!

I'd go with the AFE Magnum Force Intake w/Pro-Guard*7 and eliminate the stock airbox. This setup alone will lower your EGT's by about 125 to 150 degrees or so, plus it flows more while still filtering at 99.5%. I have an EDGE EZ on my truck set at #4 and I can't keep my foot out of it long enough to get any decent mileage. I probably lose about 80-100 miles per tank with the EDGE on #4. Sometimes the 80 to 100 mile range I lose is well worth the grin I get on my face from dusting brand x and brand y trucks. My truck only has 13k miles on it however, so I'm still a little shy from a completely broken-in engine, too.
I feel gauges are a must if you're doing injectors or a box. Get at least an EGT (pyrometer) and a boost gauge. Even without a box, the gauges really help you monitor your engine's performance and overall health.
I'd try the AFE first and then add the EDGE later. Best thing about the EDGE is if you're not happy with the mileage, it goes back to stock in 10 minutes or less.

Best Mileage
intake & exaust can't hurt but....
I've read
edge on level 3 = 1-3 mpg
synthetics = 1-2 mpg
keeping under 2100 rpm = big increase
little things like;
tire pressure
bed cap
fuel additives
10-15k break-in
manual
2wd
gear splitter overdrive &
reduce right foot pressure

Jpalese,
For best fuel mileage get a box that advances timing. For emissions reasons these CTD's have their timing retarded which really hurts mileage.

everyone probably has covered what you can do. Sometimes, things get over looked. Are your brakes functioning properly? Check to make sure you do not have too much drag and your bearings are in good condition. I know..."It's a new truck"...check them anyway!
bed cap, tire pressure, cruising RPM are majors.

Which exhaust system is the best and why?
Is the stock exhaust system worth replacing before it is worn out? Will the mileage and performance increase outweigh the cost of replacement before it is needed?

Will waitinig for the juice with an attitude produce a better result than this?

3 mpg is all I've READ about for an increase with any box. I do not run a box as of yet. I do think a box with timing would be the best for mpg. I do know it did improve my 12 valve when the timeing was set from ~13.5 to 15.5 from TDC.
The juice may have a timeing only setting for best mileage. I know the TST box does. It would be interesting to here from anyone that has the TST and is willing & patient enough to see what kind of difference the 'timeing only' setting makes.
