BDDL question-Outlook screen flickers

Hi all,

First post here on this very informative site. I have been lurking and learning for almost 3 weeks now. I have a 04.5 325/600 2WD auto that is stock other than Airaid Intake, PAC exhaust brake, and today's addition of a Bullydog Power Pup downloader with Outlook monitor. First of all, I downloaded the Performance level program into the truck. WOW!! I know that there maybe be better setups and what not, but the amount of increase was crazy. Not what I expected, especially after years of dumping big money into gasser hotrods, the seat of the pants fun factor with this diesel is so much better than gas, doubt I ever go back.

Couple of questions.

1. The instructions for the downloader that I have say to plug the OBD II harness into the OBD II plug under the driver's side dash, run cable through firewall and connect it to the Outlook master harness. I bought this unit used and it does not have this OBD II harness. All I have is the OBD II connector that connects the downloader to the OBD II plug for downloading. I am lost because the Outlook monitor turns on, shows boost and will show EGT's when I get the pyro hooked up tomorrow. Besides not having this OBD II harness, I don't have any plugs left to plug something into. I plugged into the Data Link plug down on the side of the engine, I plugged into the MAP sensor and then plugged the stock MAP sensor harness into the Outlook harness. There aren't anymore plugs!! Am I crazy, or are the instructions wrong? How do I get all 3 levels of programs into the Outlook? Hope this all makes sense, and I hope that someone is patient enough to walk through helping me out.

2. The outlook screen flickers, I have double checked all my connections and nothing seems to affect the flickering. It could be why the guy sold it, don't know. For the price, I can't complain too much. I am bitten by the bug, so I know that I am going to make some changes somewhere down the road.

Thanks for the help,
Bill

You have to have the cord that plugs into the ODB port under the steering column.. When you have the download in your truck in will stay there and when the outlook is plugged into the port it will read the program and them give you the option to change levels. ON the right hand side of the screen it will say stock, tow , performance. And you change the levels with the little joy-stick by moving it up or down.

Thanks for the rapid response. I think that might be for the Triple Dog. I have the older Power Pup, when you do the up and down, it scolls through 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%.

Am I supposed to leave the downloader under the hood somewhere plugged into the OBD II port? I don't have anymore plugs other than the cord that I used to connect the downloader to the truck this morning when I loaded the Performance level program.

I have good and bad news for you. You have just a taste of the potential of the BD downloader. You have an obsolete setup. The flickering you are experiencing is most likely a bad LED on the Outlook monitor. Could also be a bad connection, but not likely.

My sincere recommendation is to return the setup to Bully Dog for a complete update with current software/hardware and re-install. The Triple-Dog will utilize the OBD port and have a different wiring configuration. You aren't missing anything. Yes, you will be without this power for 1+ week, but it will be worth it. It will cost some $$, but you will be money ahead in the end. Absolutely worth it. Call them and get specifics.

Update:

I think that may have answered many of my own questions. Power Pup cycles through the percentages and defuels the power level that is currently loaded into the ECM. I think that I might have gotten the instruction sheet for a newer model Outlook. No problems there. What I have read, just keep it in 100% and go with that.

Secondly, went for a quick jaunt around the neighborhood. The flickering stopped. It stopped in off, the outlook is still working, just no back light. I will open it up and see if I can find a broken solder joint, what not. No biggie, just can't see it at night, but I don't do a lot of night driving anyway. Reason enough to look at an upgrade down the road.

First things first though, new tranny.

You are right about getting a taste and boy did it taste good. I will call them tomorrow and see what they can do, or maybe I will just hold off and get the PMT setup. Any thoughts on that?

Future plans for this truck are to make it fun to drive, but I still need to get 150,000-200,000 out of her. I know a built tranny is needed, tax refund is going to that. But I don't want to go all out crazy for huge HP and torque. I don't plan on twin turbo's and all of that stuff.

Yeah, We all hear this, and many, many have been there already . Bottom line; ENJOY your truck as it meets your needs and don't get too wrapped up in some of these very serious big HP discussions here.

As far as the newer generation BD products, call them and see what they advise as far as timetable, budget, etc. and come up with a plan. You will need/want to upgrade regardless at some point.
