Anyone added driving lights, advice?
Anyone added driving lights, advice?
for my next mod, I'd like to add some light on dark country roads. 8) Looks like a good place to mount some small driving lights above the front bumper next to the tow hooks. I've heard they can be wired to the parking lights so that if the truck is off, then the driving lights would go off also. Other questions:
1. I have looked at the Piaa 004, P1000xt and the 2100x. Any suggestions? Is it worth the money for Piaa or is there a cheaper solution?
2. should they, or could they be wired to the brights. You can't run either if someone is coming at you in the other lane, why not just have them come on with the brights?
Haven't seen much talk about this, maybe everyone else sees better in the dark than I do. :-

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

I have a set of Lightforce lights that I am presently making a bracket to suit so they will fit in the fog light cutouts in the bumper. Bit of a pain to get the bracket just right for focusing but should have it working soon. I plan on using a relay and a separate switch.

That's an excellent thread. I have PIAA 520's up front. They project a narrow amber beam wayyy in front of you; amazing. They must be used with caution though as they can light up the interior of the guy 100 yards ahead. www.central4wd.com had free shipping on PIAA's.

I have the PIAA 580's - pencil beam - mounted on the Warn transformer kit. Main power is switched on in the cab and rigged so that they will only come on if the high beam switch is turned on - I tapped off the high beam +12 V wire just before the bulb and feed it to the relay coil so it engages only when high beams are on.
Worth it? You bet - especially on dark country roads where deer and the odd moose tend to cross.

Steve, that's a great idea. So if I understand correctly, you have an on/off switch for the driving lights, but when the switch is on then you also have to hit the brights then they both come on. Does that give you enough light up close, or do you pull the fog lights on also?
I was up Moose hunting way north of you this fall, north of Manning. But I'd also rather not use the truck to run them down.

I am a long time PIAA fan. I have a set of 510 and 80 XT racing's which are 7" diameter and have an H4 bulb, which means they have a low beam for legal street driving (still very bright) and a 500,000+ candle power high beam (each) to transform any dark county road into daylight.
I addition to these "truck" lights, my wife's 02 turbo Jetta has a small set of PIAA's- it's her third set over the years and she won't drive at night without them.
Just my 2 cents.

Yikes...they dont give them away do they???...
Probably well worth the money, as most things that are expensive are. Cheap isnt necessarily better.

I wouldn't think HID's are a good choice for true driving lights. HID don't come up to full intensity until they warm up, and driving lights are also frequently cycled on and off together with the high beams; probably not a good thing for HID's.
