Am I being too safe about my EGT?

Okay simple question. More than likely answered over 1million times.

Simple request for a simple answer from you smart folks.

Here is the picture: Mods are current and are listed in my sig.

Crusing around town no load not flooring it. About 475-550 EGT.

Hitting it hard about 650EGT but most of the time I dont look because my eyes are watching the road.

Lugging engine uphill (**** I love the sound) goes to around 750 egt steady.

Towing and lugging goes to about 900 tops.

This is my EGT being installed immediately after the Turbine where the stock cast iron elbow connects to the downpipe.

Is there any chance in heck that I could possibly damage my engine with these temps at all? Like score a cylinder or blow a ring land or something.

Thanks

Post turbo temps arnt very reliable so I would say its defiantly possible. Get your probe reinstalled in the manifold and you will have a better idea. The big thing is how long your at those temps, at the end of the 1/4 I'm at 1800-2000 degrees and never had a problem.

From what most people I have seen post on here a POST turbo probe will read 300 to 400 degrees COOLER than PRE turbo.

A PRE Turbo Reading of 1250 is as high as you want to see sustained.

If you are seeing 900 POST turbo I would say you are right there at the limit... I would definately reinstall your probe PRE turbo.

Thats usually true but I belive thats at sustained temperatures, the post turbo location will take longer to show differences so he could be over that.

I would re-install your pyro, as you can see here... Most of us have just a ballpark guess at how high your temps are getting.

I see 1400* pre turbo all the time on my truck 1350 sustained for minutes at a time pulling a trailer. Ive seen over 1600 for a few seconds without issue although I dont reccomend it.

Or leave the one that you already have installed and install another one pre turbo.
Just a thought.

for some reason I feel a lot better about seeing 1300 every now and then

But for the OP, like everyone has said, definatly get a pre turbo probe. I think it's pretty much agreed you dont want to see 1300* or higher for any long period of time.

I think the 04.5 and up trucks take higher EGTs a bit better. I used to see 1400* towing hills bone stock.

Cool, Here is what I am going to do then.

I am going to put the EDGE EGT probe in the mani.
I will purchase another regular guage for Post.

That way I know what the turbo is seeing and the engine is seeing separately

Thanks all you wonderful Diesel Geeks lol (I love you guys!)

I read somewhere that Cummins recommends a 960 degree max for sustained EGTs (post turbo)

cummins recommends 1350* sustained pre-turbo on the 600 series engines....And nothing over 1500 for more than 10 seconds. Straight from a cummins engineers mouth.
