air filter & exhaust only

hello,

if i were to install only an after market air filter and exhaust what would it do for my tq./hp and mpg?

i read that the MBRP seems to be favored exhaust, what about a free flowing air cleaner, what make?

don't need big gains so staying away from the chips.

thanks,
david in socal

I was thinking along the same lines as you until I read on this board that freeing up the intake and exhaust and not adding a box actually reduces power. So I added a box!

These things apparently don't act like gassers!

Any time you can help the diesel breathe better it will perform better. Not sure where you got your info about losing power. Get an AFE stage 2 air intake system and a MBRP 4" exhaust and you will be fine.

I think you might have read or heard about no benefits of adding a 5" exhaust, thats about all I have heard of coming close to the losing power issue. Get the 4" exhaust and an air intake system and it will be a good upgrade

Let me know if I can help you guys out anymore!

Not a whole bunch....15-20hp maybe.

What you are gaining by these mods is lowering the EGT's and better air flow. You're not adding more fuel, so the power gains are going to minimal.

You could get away with a AFE Stage 1 and a replacement muffler if you have a 04.5-05. The pipes are already 4inch, save the cash, and just swap out the muffler.

I agree the AFE unit is the way to go. Nice piece for the money.

Wink

If you dont plan on adding a chip just straight pipe it(you already have 4in. if it is an 04.5 and up); and then just put in a Bhaf with an outerwears cover. Total it would only cost around $100.00.
That would be best IMO.

I have those same upgrades along with the gauges. The feeling is not a seat of your pants feel. According to the gauges the egts are down 50-100 degrees in normal and towing. The trottle is a lot more crisp with less effort to keep it moving. I think it is a worthwhile expense and a solid foundation for future mods. Because if you keep reading these forums you WILL be thinking about future mods.

I agree, small hp/torque gains, and you do have a solid 4" all the way exhaust already. Lose the cat, and get a flow thru muffler.
For air intake, consider the BHAF. For less than $60 it's worth a looksee.
fleetfilter.com part #42790 and Outerwears part #20-1085. $25 and $30 respectively.
Cheers
Bekim

Jannety Racing did some dyno runs with the new at the time Van Aaken box, and found that without any type of boost fooling a 3rd gen would actually lose hp/tq. Not much, but a loss is a loss. With boost fooling on the truck picked up in the hp/tq department, yielding advertised results for intake/exhaust mods.
You will need to search way back for this info but it's out there.

David,
What the other guys have said is about what you will gain. It will help the truck perform much better especially if you are going to add a power module or programmer. It just all depends on what you want from your truck, and what you are using the truck for.

I've done both on a stock 05 and the feel of the power is much improved. It pulled 267hp and 492 tq to the wheels corrected at the norcal dyno day. I have also picked up about 1.4 mpg.

You will need the intake and exhaust for the other mods any way.

I have noticed the same things that everyone else mentioned with intae and exhaust changes (no other box/chip/programmer).

Better throttle response with quicker turbo spoolup
Lower EGT's across the board
Better MPG's

It may not be much extra HP, but you will be able to tell the difference.

I had a Juice/Attitude on my 04.5 and loved it, but it rarely moved from the first setting so I am not chipping this one...for now. I have added the Rokktech sensor, and that has improved my mpg's especially in town. It's also made it feel a little stronger off the line.
