Well, I finally decided to swap my HE351 turbo into my truck. I had issues last time I tried because the bolts would not come loose so I have been spraying them with penetrating spray each week. Well, the fronts came off fairly easy but the rears were still very difficult. I really did not feel like pulling the exhaust manifold off this time so I was trying the "Simple" route. After spending way too much time fighting the rear inside bolt I realized that it was never coming off because it had rounded out too much. I decided to go ahead and pull the manifold off too. Got all the bolts off except for the very last one at the bottom rear. Of course, that one decided that it did not want to come off either and I spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to get it loose. I tried several different wrenches and even vise-grips but it wasn't happening. That one got rounded out too! Eventually I ended up pulling the fender-liner out and then the turbo elbow had to come off and the DP pushed down as far out of the way as possible. In the end I put a socket on it and tapped it on with a 3lb hammer and it finally came loose. After I lifted it out of the truck I noticed a puddle forming under the truck. I thought "WHAT NOW?!?!"(There were a few other words in there that I won't mention ) Apparently when I moved the dipstick out of the way it pulled up a bit and the rubber seal began leaking. Luckily I messed with it enough and it apparently has stopped leaking...

So, after five stinking hours, the new turbo is on and the truck seems to have a slight bit more power on the top end. It's not a lot but it is something. I also noticed that my truck no longer has any drone when I have the Van Aaken box turned on. It had a little bit of drone between 2000 and 2200rpms but it seems to be barely there now. That's nice. I don't have any guages so I don't know if my EGTs have gone down. I'm sure they have...

So now my current list of mods, other than the BHAF and VA C3.2, consists of a 2nd gen intake manifold, muffler from a 6.7l truck, and turbo, elbow, and downpipe from an 05 truck. Kind of funny...

yeah i hear ya mine took that long too. what a pita. i had to drill out my flange on one side to make the bolt holes bigger and i couldnt get the backside studs out so i had to grind the flange was a real pain

 

Well, I've done this same turbo swap several times with no issues. This one just had to be a pain.

MadHat, does it qualify as a "BOMB" if it's a stock part???? LOL

I took it off and did the tone ring mod instead. I was having some knocking issues at idle and I turned that back to stock to rule it out as a possible source. That did not make the knocking go away but it did stop eventually maybe just from me driving it everyday. (This truck was not driven much in 5 years by the previous owner) Anyways, It's funny that you mention that because this morning I was planning on turning that back up to full advance....

 

...use velcro and zip-ties.

I'm gonna have to weigh in and vote that it's not BOMBing if it's stock items.

Looks like I'm the only one teetering on that "stock" fence now DZ. I yanked the H/tech out again.
