48RE 2005 CEL Transmission Throttle Valve
48RE 2005 CEL Transmission Throttle Valve
Since I began pulling a 14K 5th wheel I occasionally get CEL indication with the following codes:
P1751 Valve Body Transmission Throttle Valve Minimum Range.
P1753 Transmission Throttle Valve Mechanical Performance.
These codes put the truck into Limp mode - very little power, very low boost. I suspect the fueling is dramatically reduced.
I have had a dealer clear the codes, the systems checked okay and full performance was restored.
According to the service manual, The transmission throttle valve cable was replaced in the 2005 trucks by the transmission throttle valve actuator (TTVA). The TTVA consists of an electric DC motor, two potentiometers, and a gear drive system. The TTVA is mechanically connected to the transmission throttle valve in the valve body by the "D" shaped opening in the bottom of the TTVA shaft.
I suspect that under certain heavy towing conditions, when the accelerator is depressed for more speed, the TTVA does not position the transmission throttle valve in the valve body in a sufficient time interval to satisfy the computer which monitors this activity. Accordingly, the computer sets the codes and the CEL (check engine light). This has only happened 6 or 7 times in 10,000 miles of towing. I have a ATS Xcellerator programmer which has the capability to read and reset codes. This only takes a few minutes and normal performance is restored. The Transmission Throttle Valve Actuator has been replaced once but the same problem has occurred on 3 occasions in the last6000 miles of towing. This problem has never occurred with no load on the truck
This is my first diesel truck and I am not highly educated regarding these complex diesel electronically controlled engine/transmission systems. My question is whether anyone else has encountered this type of problem and is there any solution available. I suspect that the use of the TTVA instead of the transmission throttle valve cable on earlier trucks was a cost reduction item which adds a degree of complexity with long term reliability consequences.
One other point is that ATS did excellent work on my truck. Before 1000 miles or any towing, I had a triple lock converter and a towing valve body installed. Also a PacBrake and Co-Pilot. The entire system works very well and I believe that the root of the problem I occasionally experience rests with the Dodge TTVA system.
I look forward to receiving comments from other 2005 Dodge owners that may have experienced a similar problem.

Do you have the ATS Co-pilot installed on your vehicle? The reason I ask is I had the same issue you have along with a few other ones. I ended up replacing the TTVA per ATS and it didn't help with anything. I ended up finding that the main problem was with the co-pilot. This is part of my experience with ATS.
After quite a few problems, I ended up putting in a full suncoast. That totally fixed my problems... On another note, I can go look at my notes and my old wiring harness from the co-pilot. There are two pins that you can jump together on there to remove the Co-pilot from the circuit and see if you still have the problem. Someone else might now what pins they are, if not I will have to call someone to go look in my truck and let me know which ones we did jump. It was something like the yellow and blue wires
