4 Level EZ Question

The Edge EZ has 4 levels from 40 hp all the way up to 70 hp. What would be the reason for using anying other than the 70 hp option?? Do you have to select a lower level for towing or something?

There are some boxes that offer only one power level, so I'm trying to figure out why the EZ makes it where you can select the level you want.

Another thing - Is the EZ mainly for towing applications? I'm looking for more HP than torque since I don't tow much. Would an EZ be good for that?

(I plan to keep everything stock except my intake and exhaust)

The EZ is a fuel pressure box...the more fuel you add the hotter you engine will run. The higher levels will add more fuel creating hotter temps. When you tow, you are creating hotter exhaust gas temps and run the risk of burning pistons or frying your turbo. This is why a pyrometer is so important, particularly if you tow or run your truck hard. It will monitor egt's and you can back off the pedal to bring the temps down. You should be ok running on level 4 with no load, but most would tell you to get a pyrometer.

Your egt's would probably be to high to pull alot of weight on level 4. I dont have gauges yet so I wont go above level 2 to tow with. Call Mark @dppi he has good prices and is a DTR advertiser.
BTW- travel trailer pulls real good in level 2. Doesnt come out of overdrive. Holds speed even on hills. Pretty good for an S.O

I have a 6-speed HO and I've never tried my EZ on anything other than level 4. I've only towed around 8,000 lbs and the biggest hills around never got EGT over about 950 degrees in cool weather.

I have 6 speed 555 with EZ, AFE P7 and 4" exhaust and I can not tow 8000 boat on hills without dangerous EGT's. I can hit 1400 in every gear and it will climb even at a sustained speed with the load. Level 3 is doable, level 2 is fine. Kind of a bummer to have all that power and I can't use it when I need it.

What is the outside air temp when you are towing? For me it was all of about 65F. The only way I can get mine to 1300 degrees is going up a long, steep, onramp with the pedal to the metal all the way to about 95 mph in 6th gear and it barely touches 1300 at that.

And I only have the EZ, no exhaust or intake or anything. I do have the boost elbow installed, however.

BEHRMAN, did you install the elbow that comes with the EZ? I'm curious to find out if it would make a difference in your EGT's?

I have towed at 50 to 90 degrees. Doesn't matter much. BTW, I have pyro preturbo. Also, I can bury my pyro to 1400+ easily without a load under hard acceleration up a hill. On the flats without a load it will goto 1400 but I am forced to shift at that point.

That's an amazing difference! Mine is also preturbo, right above the flange where it bolts to the manifold actually. I can't get to 1300 degrees until I hit 6th gear and keep on it with normal driving.

EDIT: I also have 4.10's

I hit 1220 or so once while pulling a 25' toy hauler (pre turbo). I was on level 1, and doing a pretty steep grade. I did not put the EZ elbow in, but I understand it supposed to make a difference

I rarely run at level 4 so I cannot comment on EGT's. I keep mine on level 3 whether towing or not. I tow a 7500 lb boat and have never seen above 1200 degrees. This includes running in 100+ degrees temps up some fairly steep grades from CA to AZ. Towing on the flats I am right about 1000 degrees. Non-towing is generally about 850 degrees. All temps are pre-turbo.

BTW...the boost elbow dropped my EGT's about 100 degrees towing.
