3rd Gear launch 60' times ?

Those of you launching in 3rd, what kind of 60 footers are you getting? My clutch will not hold a 3rd but it works great on 2nd. Mt best so far is 1.905 and I am hoping adding nitrous will make the turbo light faster improving it. If there is only a tenth advantage to launching in 3rd, I will stick with the single disc. I am afraid that going double disc will slow my shifting. What do you guys think? I refuse to go auto, if thats what you are thinking.

I with ya on favoring the single for quicker shifting.

What is your race weight?

I got it down to 7180 if their scale at the track was any good. I was on 245-70-17 that I put on at the track. I have gotten real good at the no lift shift but I would like to launch in 3rd. 1 less gear shift would have to be worth something right?

7180# ?

I'm jealous!

You're launching in 4WD? What RPM?
Have you tried 3rd gear?
Our '05 would launch in 3rd with the stock clutch on 315s, but it didn't like it - 2nd worked better. Seems like your short 245s & 3rd would be a great match.

We got 2.1 60's in 2WD at 9K# coming out of the hole at 2K rpm.

my 3rd gear launches are 2.2's, my 2nd gear launches are 2.3's.

My clutch is pretty beat up right now, so i couldnt tell ya if nitrous helps or not....everytime the juice hits my dual spins like a merry-go-round.

my 13.116 had a 2.209 60'

I got down to 7180 removing all the crap, spare tire, tailgate and had 1/4 tank of fuel. When I launched, I "wicked" the throttle between 2300-2800 to try and build some boost. I have a good bit of tire spin out of the hole and I think a ARB up front may help or break something. I tried once to get it out in 3rd, but the clutch slipped the whole time I was in 3rd. Once I got it into 4th, it was ok but the 60' was 2.4 Next time I am going to try the 35's and see how it comes out of the hole with them.

I hope you the best of luck. Please let me know your times. I know with a little practice we can show some of these automatic guys some good times. I know it is hard to do and that is what makes it fun. Plus we always have that excuse... "Your lucky I messed up going into 5th or I would have had your a@$" Works every time

well as a update i havent been to the track yet but talking about it got me excited sooooo i was on a back country road last night with a frieand and his 96 mustang gt and found out my clutch wont hold 3rd in 4wd i guess in 2wd the tires spin enough to work but 4wd is a no go i might have to bite the bullet and get a dual disk soon but on a good note i can stay door to door with a 96 gt with a few bolt ons untill 110 and then he leaves darn speed limiter

I thinik the only way I could leave in 3rd and 4wd is if i had nitrous to help the turbo to spool. I have the clutch to do it but it bogs the truck down. 2nd gear works quite well for me. You need big fuel and a big clutch to do 3rd gear launches. You almost have to slip the clutch instead of dropping it in third from what i found

Careful on those 3rd gear launches, good way to weld up a clutch.

As long as you have the clutch to hold it, 3rd gear launches work pretty well with a minimum of bog... the trick is to use the insane amount of kinetic energy from the CTD's massive reciprocating assembly at 2500 RPM+

Caution: this may result in premature drivetrain fracture!

... but it's still easier on the truck than sled-pulling carnage

I hit the spray in 6th gear. so from 100ish-109 was with spray.
Only reason I hit it is because me and the stang beside me were nose too nose....and i wanted the win.

I guess if the 3rd gear launch doesnt shine in the 60' is it more noticible in the 330'? I guess what I am really getting at is the single I have holds a 2nd gear 5psi dump at 2500 really well. My goal is to crack into the 13.2-13.3 range and I think I can do it with some spray and a top end program. I am starting the 2k will be better spent on a new turbo instead of a double disc. My egt's are good, but I know the small exhaust size is killing my top end.

Take a look at this time slip and see what you guys think. Would you improve on the top and try and gain the time from 1/8 to 1/4 or try and get a better launch? This slip is pretty much in the middle of what I run.
