Are 3-disc Torque Converters Bad?
Are 3-disc Torque Converters Bad?
I have talked to Dave at Goerend transmissions and I was totally sold on his products. Then I made the mistake of going to the DTT website and reading their forums. Apparently multi disc converters will fail prematurely because the design doesn't work and causes constant friction on 2 of the 3 discs even when disengaged? I can't make heads or tails of the argument because of all the flaming but I would like to get some real world information before I buy a TC/VB and other goodies for my transmission. I really like Dave at Goerends transmission so if your running his stuff please chime in. Thanks, Tom J.
i am running his triple disc and valve body as well as all new internals a 48 re front drum and a billet input shaft. i love it mcmopar on here is a dealer for dave and is also a very good friend of mine. i know guys who have gone with the other stuff and had problems. all i an say is if you want the truth the real truth then you have already heard it !!
hope this helps

DTT used to be against multi-disc converters and in favor of single-disc with higher line pressures and upgraded internal sealing to hold the pressure. The market, however, moved on to multi-disc converters, and eventually DTT had to come up with a product to be competitive. That's my perspective as an outside observer.

First...you need a multi-disc for high or even moderate power.
Second...Dave sells a 3 disc with a lifetime warranty so what's the worry.
Third...DTT still pushes the single discs. They will tell you that they have single discs holding in 850hp trucks. They do. They are race trucks that are at WOT with the highest possible line pressure. If you have a truck capable of producing say 450hp at only partial throttle, the tranny pressure is not at max beacause you are not at WOT and that single disc will fail long before a multi.
I have been running Dave's TC/VB for about 25k miles so far and it is holding 500+hp.

WOW, Your holding all those mods with just a TC and VB. That's awesome.......
I am thinking of adding a 62/14 size turbo and some F1 injectors to what i have. I thought I might need an input shaft also. I don't do any boosted launches and just want the freedom to floor it at will. Anyways thanks for the responses. Tom J.

I remember the days of calling tranny shops looking for a built trans... The DTT dealers will tell you that anything but a single disk will "self-destruct". Obviously that is something that DTT told their dealers.....
I've had a suncoast triple disk in mine for 25,000+ miles... Well over 100 four wheel drive boosted launchs. Member Greyrig05 just layed down around 800hp with his triple disk without a single problem.
I heard from a DTT dealer a while back that DTT now offers a triple disk. That's weird after reading all the smack they used to talk about multi layered tc's...
The funny thing is, I've personally seen a full built DTT trans go through several single disk tc's....
Don't listen to the bs, get a triple disk.
