Only if setting a code, perform cluster test, key on while holding odometer reset in. Watch movement of tach needle should swing 5-3-1. if not then replace cluster.

There is a cheap fix out there for the '06 tachs that involves just removing a few torx screws from the perimeter if the back of the cluster. Do a search, several people have had good results. I ended up replacing the entire cluster before I was aware of the cheap fix.

Oh, that and a nav / sat radio that loves to "crash". But rest assured, the problem wasn't confined to just us. My fiance's '12 Avenger shares the joy . (Love the car otherwise )

The real issue is most likely cold solder joints or cracked circuit board lands on the instrument cluster
Removing screws takes tension or flexing out of the picture and improves the poor connection so that in most cases the tach now works
But thats not the proper fix, something else is wrong. Still saves money if it works but if I were to remove my cluster I would be looking a little deeper.

30 minute fix update from OP
Hello everyone it's been awhile since I've logged back in but my original fix on my 06 tach is still working and not once has the tach messed up since 2014! "Knock on WOOD"

I know that it has been some time since this thread was active like coming up on three years. The issue is important enough to update. Remove the dash cluster and set it on a bench. Remove the backing to where you can access the cold welds on the back. Retouch those cold welds with a soldering gun and reassemble. There is some shimming that needs to be done when reassembling and when all is back together your RPM gauge should be working. There are many examples of just what I described on youtube. This worked out perfectly for me.

There are youtube videos on repairing the dash gauge assembly. It worked for me. The dash gauge assembly went through a cold soldiering assembling process that was substandard and defective. Remove the dash gauge, flip it ver and re soldier the joints. Place a couple of shims on the back side of the dash and your RPM is repaired.
