Hey fellas. My dad came into some money and wants to have his transmission built or buy a built one. I've heard nothing but good about Goerend. ATS has a good product but as a lot of you know, their customer service is crap so we'll more than likely be staying away from them.
That being said, what would be a good route to go? His truck is a 2006 3500 MegaCab SRW. It won't be seeing any towing duties and there are no plans anytime in the near future. It's his daily driver, back and forth to work and some other running around on his days off. We have a really good transmission shop that we've been using for years now and have thought to ask their opinion as well. They're an authorized ATS dealer so of course, they're gonna try and push their product but $8,000 for a fully built transmission is a little extreme. I'm sure the same can be had from someone else for far less. However, if any issue should arise, it would be on the shop to handle any phone calls. I'm still not fond of their pricing.
I wanted to get everyone's opinions here first since I know a lot of you have the experience already and can provide a lot of good info. Any thoughts or advice you guys can give would be greatly appreciated!

I would say go local, see if Goerend has a local authorized dealer. If you can't go local and have to ship go Tim Barber aka TRE Diesel, I would put his trans against any big builder. And you are going to save A LOT Of cash

Brown's Diesel up toward Fresno installs Goerend... but that is pretty far from you. Call Goerends and ask them... they'll work with a known tranny shop as well. As far as what you need, Dave Goerend won't sell you anything you don't need. It'll probably be along the lines of his "heavy duty" rebuild, triple disc torque converter (probably his 15 blade left hand cut-- lower stall speed) and billet input. Stock intermediate and output for your purpose will be fine.
You can have anyone install a Goerend VB and TC. Then add some easy parts like a billet servo and lever and replace the weak front band and you will have a fab trans for under $2K.
But consider while you are in there maybe you want to add a billet input and upgrade the clutches and seals. It will cost a lot more, but when you go to sell it you will have a built Goerend trans and that should recoup your costs.

Ingelwood transmition in fullerton CA Mike W is a tranny guru. I had him build my trans he works with Goerend directly. Dave goerend and mike go way back and are always working together to make better and stronger solutions for diesel trannys.
Mike W is super **** and wont let a tranny leave his shop with out it being perfect. He will work with u to build the tranny for what u want it to do. Takes about a day 1/2 to fully rebuild install and test.
