2003 SO performance question

OK, my head is spinning from all the info here. may be easiest to just ask all SO oweners (or prior owners) a question.

First I'm selling a d-max with a VanAaken.. So I'm accustomed to 370-410 hp.

My SO at 250 (and 48re tranny) is noticeably weaker (as expected).

Where to go go get me back up to what I expect for HP?

Xilaraider 100hp?, race?
Bully dog?
TS Ramifier?
VanAaken again?
combination of one of the above with the ring mod?

Obviously I don't want a straight pressure box but am interested in these that offer a little of everything.

Smoke doesn't bother me at all.

So, I know there is no ONE answer, as many boxes will suffice but would like to hear from those with SO experience. I don't have the cash to modify my tranny right now.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Very subjective. Your gonna gets lots of different answers. If you want to get it into the 400hp area to compete with what your duramax had, you will definitely need a TST box or Edge Juice and a bigger turbo so that you can use it. If you just want to plug something in and do nothing else, for low cost, ease of install, adjustability,......and if I had to pick just one, probably an Xillaraider Race. They really wake the SO engines up and used ones in the classifieds section go cheap cheap cheap. Just don't play around on the 140hp setting too much until you can afford that tranny. The 47RE is not going to take that much additional power forever.

thanks, yeah I know i'll get a few different opinions but that's what I'm after.

also, I have the 48re tranny. not the 47. the race box is definatly a favourite on my list

AKRAM is right. Even with my Quad race box I bet I'll only dyno at 330 or 340hp tops. My truck dynod at 299.5hp with an EZ box on level 4. The big drawback is tq. Even at 299hp my tq was only 554ft/lb. Still enough to pull my 12,000lb trailer easily but not enough for bragging rights. From what I've seen, AKRAM and Tomeygun have two of the most powerful SO's on this site. Both have bigger turbos or twins and stacked boxes, injectors, etc... That's what it's going to take to get to your desired power level but anything more than a 50-60hp increase will require some trans upgrades...

I'm running the Bully Dog DL and a Quadzilla box on my truck purchased from AKRAM and it wakes the truck up but I did go with the tranny modifications. I'm not in the big HP hunt but it's fun and I hope fairly safe for what I am after. Good luck on this one, I bet you get about a million different answers. I think there are a lot of good products out there for the SO trucks.

Dodgezilla,
Being ignorant when it comes to dodge for the most part, my question is.. If I have the same tranny as a 305hp HO, and they can safely run 100hp boxes..(= 405 at the flywheel),

why can't I run 155hp and put 405hp at the flywheel? Isn't the limiting factor with our trucks still the tranny? If they are the same between an SO and a HO (mine is). why is it recommended to get a tranny upgrade so much sooner?

again, I could be missing an important point here so I apprecieate it if someone sets me straight.

J.

Well, anytime you put a box on one of these trucks you really should be prepared to upgrade the transmission. Yes your trans is the same one that comes in the HO trucks but it's really designed to handle only stock power. Putting any of the popular boxes on your SO will bump your power to just a little above what a stock HO puts out so although you would probably be safe you will still run the risk of having trans problems. Remember, all power increase claims for these boxes are rear wheel gains, not flywheel gains and that's a lot of power hammering on your transmission. Some guys may run for years with a 100hp box and have no problems but if you're like most of us here you will get on it quite a bit and that's when the converter usually will start slipping so I wouldn't say anyone could "Safely" run a 100hp box. There are a lot of people here more knowledgeable than me and I'm sure they will chime in. I for one went ahead and got the converter/valve body so I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. Now I'm at the point where if I want to make any more power I will have to get a full trans upgrade.

Check ot SRADKE on the TDR and myself, We both have SO's and it seems most SO's do about 200 hp when stock

So you have to make an extra 200hp? TST/EZ stack or a HOT juice would be my move

Check out my dyno page in my sig if you like!

ok, well I guess what's important to me isn't necessarrily the actual numbers but getting my CTD up to where I left my D-max (cause I was happy!).

it was 300hp at the flywheel plus 70 RWHP
