1999 powerstorke
they went to a high pressure oil pump and intercooled all of the trucks..the hpop is part of the reason why you couldnt run bigger than factory injectors on the older ones
The CPS is the crank position sensor and is not on recall. It is the cam position sensor, abbreviated CMP that is on recall now.
I owned an early 99 for about two years. I had it from 124k to 147k. It was definitely a solid truck, the engine ran great and got better mileage than the 05 z71 it replaced despite being about 2k lbs heavier. I think that the 99 I had is just slightly a better truck than both of my 03's but the Cummins is leagues better than any Powerstroke. I loved the room, big, REAL crew cab...not a stupid idiotic imitation like the quad cab. Only things I replaced on it during my ownership was a belt tensioner, cmp (cam sensor). Nothing major. The door lock actuators like to get weak on them, all 4 of mine got the point where it took several times hitting the button for them to come up, eventually failing altogether....and they do it all at once, despite the fact the most of the time you'll only need your door unlocked.
Oh and mine also didn't like to start easily below 30* and was horrible to get started once when it was about 5 below. Both my CTD's have started down to single digit temps pretty easily.
Bottom line, it's a reliable truck IMO, and the 7.3 is pretty good. If you're looking for a powerhouse though, you might start playing the lottery.

The auto trans in the Fords were pretty rough (E4OD or 4R100s), the six speed ZF trans is much better. The trucks don't put out much power, and modding the Fords is very expensive. Most you would see is about 300-350 HP with the stock turbo and injectors... luckily the 99s have Forged Rods capable of handling much more power than the PMRs in the 01-03 years. Overall the 7.3s were a fairly good truck.
