Uh oh... STA-BIL

I'm getting ready a long period away from my vehicles and so I started preparing them for semi-long storage. I remember buying some STA-BIL for my motorcycle and I remember that the bottle also said that it was also good for use with diesel engines. This was about 3 years ago.

I went to the gas station and bought a new bottle of the stuff. I looked for the "also for use with diesel engines" stamp on the bottle but it didn't say. I asked the automotive tech behind the counter if the stuff was good for diesel engines too and he said it was so I bought it and added about about 5 ounces in the tank before filling completely up.

When I got home, I looked up STA-BIL online and saw that there was a new mixture made for diesel engines. That's about when I broke into a sweat thinking that I may have ruined my engine. I saw a couple of posts that suggested that I would be fine, but part of me is still freaking out.

Anyone have any suggestions about what I do with the gas in my tank? Do I need to get the thing drained?

WB

5 ounces? You're ok, man. Unless you put 5 ounces of nitroglycerin in there, you'll be fine no matter what you put in there.

5 oz in 32-34 gallons... no sweat.

Good on you for being this concerned, tho.

Guys he is hitting a area that I need to address though. I have a feeling my truck will get driven a little by the wife but the question I got is, "what is the best fuel treatment for storage on our trucks?" I know an anti-algae is needed as well as stabilizer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

TIA

Ben

The new type stabilizer is probably formulated to not mess up new emissions equipment. One use of old stuff shouldn't hurt.

Napa has the Diesel Power Service additive on sale. 100 Gallon treatment for 5.89. I use 1 bottle per tank, and when she is going to sit for a while I drain then fill the filter reservoir with PS....No issues here. And mine sat for 9 months while in Iraq. The other thing I did was top off the tank. I took a 3 gallon jug and filled it. Once the truck was parked and on blocks I filled the tank all the way to the fill spout. There was fuel in the cup when I put the cap on. It was still there when I got home....only about 1" down. Now this was stored in a climate controlled garage.

Microbes in the form of bacteria and fungus are present in all diesel fuels. Long periods of fuel storage can create ideal opportunities for microbes to grow in fuel tanks. The first indication of microbial contamination is mucous-like accumulations on fuel-filters and increased requirements for fuel-filter replacement. Microbes can only be removed from the fuel system by use of a diesel fuel biocide.
