Turbo Failure

Turbo Failure
I have a 3500 6.7l auto 4x4 with about 2700 miles on it. Last weekend the CEL came on. I cycled the ignition and codes P061A and P2262 pop up (Level 2 Torque Performance & Turbo Boost not detected). Took it to the dealer, they said it was a turbo changer failure. It has been at the dealer for over a week now because the turbos are on back order. I can't get my dealer to tell me anything. Is turbo failure a common problem on these 6.7Ls? Has anyone else had this problem or know what is causing the turbo failures? Does anyone know if Cummins or DC has addressed the problem?

They are on backorder. -86 to be exact. Haven't heard of any personally , but there is a new flash to protect turbo by limiting engine speed if mph is 1 or less. Also the dealer will have to contact the STAR hotline to get the part ordered. They are restricted and must have prior authorization to be ordered.

I had the same codes last Sunday took it to the dealer mon mornin and they said that they had called chrysler and just to drive it like it was until they got the part. I ended up getting a 5.9 that day.

I have been having the same codes now for about three weeks. I have had the truck for a month and two weeks and have 9000 miles on it. The light has been coming on and off for about 6000 miles of its life. The first time it was the egr circuit and that hasnt come back since they did the reflash. I have been getting the turbo charger codes since then. I can usually make the light come on if it happes to be off by simply accellerating hard from a stand still. They are wanting to keep the truck for 3-4 days to do some electrical tests that STAR wants and then engineering is supposed to take over to try and find a fix. Really weird thing is twice the exhaust brake has come on while accellerating the truck with the exhaust brake switch off. Oh nad they refuse to pay for a rental while they take the 3-4 days to diagnose the problem. I have bought 6 new Chrysler vehicles since 2002 and have never had this kind of problem.

I understand your pains, I liked the 6.7 alot, had mine for 2.5 wks w/ 3000 mi on it when it started throwing codes took it to the dealer and had the new flash loaded, and 4 days later I was back with turbo boost codes and one other. Talked with mgmt. and got my current 5.9 had it 6 days so far and I am enjoying it. Just make sure you dont let the 6.7 idle for too long, service and ctd engineers said that's what caused the problems with mine. But I have to sit out on jobsites to make $$$. Hope Dodge gets these emissions figured out in a few yrs b/c I will be needing another before too long.

i'm not sure is the turbos are actually failing but i believe and correct me if i'm wrong that the problem actually is in the variable geometry veins in the turbo, you exhaust brake is not actually an exhaust brake but a turbo brake, whick could explain the lack of turbo boost and the EB engauging on its own. i would almost have to think there is some kind of a electric servo motor on the turbo to control boost levels just like the old wastegate system.

I'm getting the same feeling as if the brake is on when the switch is off. This a major bummer and feel for those in bad situations. When is DC going to fix this? Does anyone know of they are working on it. Do all you guys have code readers? My overhead console says "System OK" all the time. Is this where I will get the colg %'s for my emissions?

yes if your dpf starts to plug with soot the overhead console will notify you then this condition occurs, I recommend you look in you owners manual it tells you the details you want too know. there is a rapid response 07-021 out for excessive soot accumulation, i haven't seen that particular number mentioned here since i started reading these forums. maybe there are different #'s in canada than the U.S,( they might call it rev B in the states but i'm not sure about that, please someone let me know). But I have seen this TSB my self and is says in red letters at the top of the page "must be installed before unit is sold" there was more to it but you can catch my drift.
My brother Has the identical truck as mine and the only time his DPF shows a reading on the overhead is when he idles his truck for more than 2 hours(before the update), 4 hours after the update, and the dpf cleaned quicker after the update as well. plus on both of our trucks after the update we noticed a performance gain, and the transmission shifted alot better, will now down shift from 6th to 5th when traveling between 120-135 KPH.

But I will check.

I just pulled code P2262 & code P0513 from mine... about 30 miles before code came on I felt exhaust brake "trip" for a second while slowing down to a stop sign... the exhaust brake was off but still pulled for a second
then the light came on, when I shut the truck off in my driveway it sounded like it bogged down... almost like an exhaust brake sound, or possibly the turbo taking a really long time to slow down... then I started it to see if it would make that sound again while I was looking under hood w/maglite & it shut off normal, but i pulled the codes.
I have a S&B intake that will be coming off before I take it to the dealership...
