too soon for lemon law?
In fact I just saw an article in Diesel magazine (I think it was that one) that shows a 6.7 Cummins touring around on a test stand with all the DPF systems attached. The articles caption was something like, "If it smokes, it's broke". I would think that if they wanted to distance themselves from the emissions systems they would. Don't kid yourself, Cummins isn't sitting back letting this happen to them, there's simply too much at stake. And let's not forget that there's some MAJOR bragging rights on the line having the first mass produced diesel on the market that is 2010 compliant.
I agree with Hovisimo on this one. It's a package deal and it seems Cummins would have had enough time with the systems during testing to pull the plug on them if they didn't show promise.
Once all these systems do get the bugs ironed out and the 6.7 package is sound, the old Cummins diehards will join the bandwagon and brag about the company, it's engine and the advanced technology once again. Let's face it, that's how change happens.
So you're saying the EGR system is not Cummins? That makes no sense. Or maybe just lumping "emissions junk" into one blanket category is terribly misleading.

BTW, I didn't say you had to agree with me.
Most of the diesel engine manufacturers are still trying to make thier '07 compliant engines work relaibly. R & D takes time, lots of it, and even more $$$$ to make these enormous changes work.
Seriously, google the 2007 emissions program for diesels sometime and do some serious reading - this is not small fry changes we're talking about. If the EPA & Sierra Club had gotten thier way, diesels would be a thing of the past.
Thanks by the way to the original poster for handling this professionally, and keeping a positive outlook despite quite difficult circumstances. No one expects or wants this out of a new truck!

I am afraid that diesels will become a thing of the past...with fuel prices some 25 cents higher than gas. If prices approach 4 dollars a gallon, nobody will touch a diesel, or for that matter a truck! Yea, I know diesel has more BTUs!!! Economically, the only people that will be able to afford a diesel will be a business man that write off the cost!
My mechanic at the Dodge dealer sez I made the right decision with the 07 5.9 rather than holding out for a 6.7. He said it wasnt worth the problems just to get a 6 speed automatic! He also said that the 6.7s burn an extra 5 quarts of fuel PER FILL UP, just to clean up the emissions. Thats an additional 8500 dollars of ADDITIONALl fuel for each 100000 miles @375 miles to the tank, and 3 dollars a gallon...For me NO WAY!!! I will just keep my 5.9!!!

2. If diesel hits $4 per gallon, gasoline won't be far behind
3. Strange how your mechanic wants to sell his way out of a job...
4. 5 extra quarts - probably meant gallons - otherwise it would be a non-issue - and if you really did mean quarts, big deal.
5. Enjoy your 5.9 and tell your mechanic you'll miss him. My 6.7 will keep him busy.

repair history of 2007 Dodge Ram VIN 7G767888:
10/23/07: Brake lights staying illuminated due to broken brake switch, malfunction indicator light on, electronic throttle control light is on. Local dealer replaced brake switch and misdiagnosed check engine light and electronic throttle control light being attributed to the broken brake switch. New brake switch improperly installed, made squeaking noise and did not illuminate brake lights when brake pedal pressed.
11/6/07: Brake lights not illuminating when brake pedal pressed, malfunction indicator light still on, electronic throttle control light still on, truck getting 8MPG, drove 147 miles on 17 gallons of fuel. Local dealer again replaced brake switch and performed engine recall. Check engine light still on, electronic throttle control light still on, no change in fuel economy.
11/8/07: Truck getting 8MPG, malfunction indicator light on, electronic throttle control light on, dealer misdiagnosed as faulty thermostat. Local dealer ordered new thermostat, never advised me the part arrived or to make follow up appointment. After talking to a colleague who works for Cummins I learned there was nothing wrong with the thermostat, and to check the fuses. Found blown fuse, replaced, malfunction indicator light has not come on since.
11/27/07: Contacted local dealer to schedule appointment for brake lights and electronic throttle control light. Service writer refused to do any more warranty work to the truck and told me I had to take it to the selling dealer.
11/29/07: Electronic throttle control light on, brake lights not illuminating when brake pedal pressed, L heated mirror inoperative. Apparently no known fix for fuel economy. Took to selling dealer, who fixed nothing. I can still apply significant braking pressure and the brake lights do not light up and the cruise control does not cancel, confirming the brake switch is still not operating properly. I have been driving with faulty brake lights for 1250 miles. This is, in my opinion, a major safety issue.
Total trips:
Electronic throttle control light: 4
Check engine light: 3
Brake switch: 3
I did what any sensible person would do, rounded up all my paperwork and retained an attorney. I can bring my bring my new truck to a complete stop with no brake lights. Upon getting my truck back tonight, in addition to nothing being fixed, they left my daylighters on and melted the covers. Dealer names have been censored to protect the "innocent." If you live in western PA I would not advise dealing with dealerships in Grove City or Meadville
Honestly if I could get the brake switch fixed and figure out why the ETC light comes on every time I decelerate on a highway offramp, the truck would be nice to drive. I did manage to squeeze 400 miles out of a tank of fuel doing mostly highway driving.

Unless you have I would try one that has great service. Most of the time they know what there doing.
OK, I will probably get slammed for this....
Honestly, I think you did the right thing. I love my Dodge truck, but I would have done the same! I just got rid of my 2001 GMC Denali Yukon XL... I can't even begin to express my negative feelings. I went through 4 transmissions and a whole long list of other things, about 15-20K of repairs. OK, all under warrenty thanks to the transmission warr. and extended warr. If I could have lemon lawed... I would have without question.
There is no other option for a heavy duty truck, other than an American brand. I am all for my country and the product it produces. But this is no reason to tolerate sub-par quality standards. Sure there are many factors which make our vehicles expensive to produce and the manufacturers have to cut corners to be competative (labor unions, etc...). There must be a limit to what should be tolerated.
my own $0.02...

35K for an '06 with 33,000 miles sound's pretty high, even if it is a laramie. I got into my 07 2500 QC 5.9 4sp. SLT Big Horn for just under 34K out the door, I know it's not a laramie, but it was brand new. I understand you are probably just ready to be done with the whole thing, just hate to see somone pay too much for somthing just cause they "want" it or like it, aka impulse buying. I know cause this is something I do quite often
. and end up regretting it after, usually cause i could have had a similar or better thing a little later usually for less than what i paid, then i just end up kicking my self in the keester. Either way sorry to hear about your troubles with the 6.7 and good luck with whatever happens.
I would hope not, in my time here I have never slammed Dodge/Cummins, including an entire bad short block in my 5.9. Likewise I expect that most members are intelligent enough to realize the difference between discussing serious problems and seeking a solution and brand bashing. Most people on GM boards understand problems with the 4L60 transmission are common, as most people here are going to come to understand the same about the 6.7L.
There has been much civility in this thread, only reason I bring it up is that usually lemon threads end up like "Dodge sucks shoulda gotten a Powerstoke I'M OUT!" like I explained initially, I am a patient man, at this point I'd just like some functional brake lights and to know why my ETC light comes on constantly. It just so happens under PA law that after 3 trips to the dealer wanting functional brake lights and to know why my ETC light comes on constantly, I am entitled to financial compensation.
I'll likely keep this truck, chances of switching everything back over to a 5.9L went from slim to none with me almost losing a finger yesterday. You could say this is a bad week [/sympathy card]
still baffled the MIL appears to have been caused by a FUSE, this ordeal started out with one problem but quickly ended up being another.

Man I feel for ya. Your truck can be fixed but good god, what terrible dealers. They can't deny you warranty work even if they are not the selling dealer. Had a local Nissan shop try that, Not good, Nissan made the owner work as a service writter for 3 months for that escapade.
So it is not just american dealer that can be bad, it can be any dealer, any brand, and any vehicle or trailer you may buy.
You need to call Dodge on this one and open up a claim. I hope you already have.

Still, going to call tomorrow and advise them that one dealer's service dept refused to work on it, and the other's general manager said hope it works out for you and hung up.
what rock do you have to crawl out from under to work at a dealership?
