Regeneration and Fuel Mileage Case Study

Just something I decided to study, and that I though might be interesting/informational to others...

I filled up at the station yesterday evening, reset all tripometers, avg. fuel economy, etc, and I hit the highway. I cruised it at 60mph, and I was steadily climbing on the average fuel consumption(pyro reading 700 F). I peaked at 19.7 avg. mpg at exactly 16.4 miles on the tripometer. Then I saw my pyro guage creep up to 1050 F, and my avg. fuel mileage started plummeting(the regeneration cycle). I exited the highway at 22.2 miles on the tripometer(still in regeneration), and, in that 5.8 miles(since 16.4 miles), my average fuel economy had dropped to 18.2mpg on the overhead computer. With 16.4 miles out of 22.2 miles, that means that 26% of my miles were driven during a regeneration cycle! From these numbers, I suspect that I was averaging 4-5mpg less during the regeneration cycle.

FYI, my last tank which was 70% highway, 30% city gave me 16.86mpg hand calculated. My highway speed probably averaged between 60 and 65 mph. Not too shabby IMO, but knowing what I could be averaging without the regeration cycles...

Smarty, please help

Yeah, seems like it would do a lot better on diesel fuel. Hmmmm, just a thought.

I had the same thing happen the other day. I had my overhead reading 21.1 after about a 30 mile trip. Made the same trip the next day and average dropped to 16.9. I was excited to see my overhead over 20 mpg but it was short lived.
